fetichism or fetishism?

I see.... thanks for that reply Sneaks. I guess you're right, and it sounds more logical to be consistent, rather than accurate in this case (just in case it ruins the flow). In my thesis those words/names wouldn't work in terminology, but perhaps I could put a footnote at the word's first occurrence in the thesis. So from that point on the reader becomes aware. Or would that be a bit silly?

Not the typos I have, they give the impression things are wrong :-( Part of me would prefer to resubmit so I could improve it alot I have so many ideas that could go into it. But how can I say that to the examiner without being asked "Why didn't you do this already?"

It is hard to say something without seeing those typos, but I agree with Sneaks. And unless you've submitted without a supervisor's consent (or your supervisor neglected your work), it's so unlikely that they would cause major corrections. I'm only talking from the experience of others that I heard though; I haven't submitted yet, and I too would feel like you do now in that situation probably.... But sometimes it is easier to look at things as an outsider, so I hope our comments will help you relax a bit. You'll cross that bridge when you come to it, and hopefully it won't be a tough one. Good luck

fetichism or fetishism?

Google gives contradicting results, so I thought I'd ask academics... Which one is the correct one in British spelling? Also, should I spell whichever way the authors spell, then mention the spelling differences somewhere in the thesis even if I won't be doing any direct quotes? Or should I stick to one spelling throughout my thesis, and consistently use that? I guess that would also need some explaining in the text?

Name of the key-character of my research is also spelt in two different ways in different publications. I am also in two minds about what decision to take about the use of spelling in my thesis, so my question goes for that too.

Thanks in advance...

matryoshka doll of Citations

Yes, when we cite something that was already cited by another author, we have to reference to both of them... But what would you do in the following two situations?

1) A direct quote from Paper-B was cited in Paper-A, so you've found and read the original of Paper-B. But then realised there are more appropriate gems in that paper than what that quote was about, and as a result you used a different idea from that paper. When referencing Paper-B, would you still cite Paper-A with it? (You are already citing Paper-A for something else anyway)?

2) At some point during your research you've read Paper-X and cited. Much later you read a new article, Paper-Y. Then after a while, you re-read Paper-Y and noticed a footnote mentioning Paper-X. Not saying exactly the same thing as you, but context is similar. Now, would you amend the reference of Paper-Y when citing Paper-X, even though you weren't aware of Paper-Y at the time?

If you could travel back in time, where would you go?

I would go to my parents' childhood. Always wondered what what they were like as kids.

Do you have pets? How do they react to your writing-up?

Recently I am having to ignore my cats completely apart from giving them their food, due to my submission deadline is approaching like a bullet train. So one of my two cats started to voice his need for attention and the more I ignored him, the more he tried... I think he decided to try new tricks and for the last few days if he can't get my attention, as a last resort he jumps on my desk, so acrobatically finds his way to my keyboard and lays down on it while I'm typing. If I am reading, he then places himself on the open book or paper that I'm reading. Now he pretends that he's asleep on my notebook (that I was taking notes on just before starting this thread). It's funny though, never when I'm procrastinating :-)

Do you have pets? How do you make time for them? Do they behave strange with your changing schedule?

sociology/psychology reference advice needed

Hey Satchi. My background isn't psychology either, so forgive me if this is not helpful but I remember reading something in that topic in Adam Phillips (and perhaps even Christopher Bollas) books. Can't remember which essay(s) in which book though, as it's been a while and read so many book by Phillips but I have a feeling it was in "On Kissing, Tickling, and Being Bored: Psychoanalytic Essays on the Unexamined Life". I'll dig up the books in a bit and reply again if I find something useful. Good luck.

how to narrow this topic
4

you could pick a random aspect of your research, and narrow down towards a question or a situation. For example start with your audience. If it's 'everyone in tourism industry', then it might be too big of an audience. Then repeat that with other elements. A test could be try to narrow down every word in your topic individually to see where it takes you. Also read some thesis titles in your subject area, to understand where your supervisor is coming from. Good luck (up)

I think typos are considered as minor corrections.

Moving somewhere new and making friends

also checkout flickr groups in your area. Most city/town related ones (even venue-related ones) do weekly meet-ups for drinks and chat. Even if you are not a photographer, wanting to find out about the city and its people to make friends is good enough reason to join.

Moving somewhere new and making friends

aww.. bless :-)

I suppose there is always spiders' method of making friends with flies? Or conquer from inside and make friends with their partners first....

Ok ok, joke aside, I think I'd look for some gigs or games to attend to in the evenings, to meet some like-minded people?

Do you know any FREE Survey / Questionnaire software or service?
4

Hi all... I hope work is going well...

I usually design and program my own questionnaires but this time I have to act very quickly and get something together in no time (spotted some gaps so close to submission deadline). I know a few online survey programs but they have a monthly charge. Do you know any OpenSource / free software or a website service? Doesn't have to be so advanced. Even something like the poll on this website would be good (as long as it shows number of people responded).

Many thankssssssssss :-)

Fictional interviews as 'method'

I still don't understand the point properly, but a friend gave an example of an imaginary interview she did with a philosopher for an essay she wrote once for her masters. Kind of made sense. Hmmm....

Corrections - how long did you wait?

well done, and congratulations :-)
