That sounds like a bit of a bribe :-) Ok then, we'll do. I'll wait for it to get a little bit more crowded though.

Yep, Endnote. You won't regret. And you can always ask questions at this forum if you can't find your way around it...

Chances of getting on a PhD
4

Even if you get the best grades, this won't guarantee a place for PhD. First of all, I recommend you to start looking at it a bit more positively. It is not "highly unlikely" for you to get a funded place. Funded places are limited, yes, but this doesn't mean you don't have a chance. My first degree was not good either but my Masters degree made up for it... with a good proposal I secured a few funded places to choose from. You can too. Focus on what you want and start working on a good proposal. Good luck (up)

which supervisors advice do I take
4

A friend, another phd student, did what your 2nd supervisor suggested. She managed to publish papers and she ended up using everything she wrote in 3 years in her thesis. However she was quite consistent from the beginning and she didn't have to change her approach at all. Whereas I didn't have a clue about what I was saying most of the time; my work changed a lot since I started my research. If I've been writing papers I wouldn't be using any of them in my thesis (in fact I had to re-write 2 of my chapters.) So it all depends on how you work, what stage you are at your research and what type of research project you have. In most cases, it is best to focus on your thesis and get papers from your thesis if you can.

dress to impress for teaching success?
4

I'd say wear whatever you feel comfortable in, unless your department especially asked for smart-casual or some other "way" to dress. I didn't have any money to get new clothes, or change my hairstyle when I was teaching, besides I didn't really want to anyway. I did get the variations of "oh, I thought you were one of the students" from the head of my department every time he walked into my class, but apart from that all went smoothly. You won't feel confident if you wear something that makes you feel different than your usual self.

H being as sincere as always...

But I know for a fact that you're not ugly. Feeling ugly is a different matter though. I know how you feel. It must be the PhD, and the weight it brings. The way I see it, you need to have down times in order to achieve high ones. The transition to the high moment is priceless. I hope yours will come soon too. (up) (what happened to the other smileys?)
