yes we are sue . And it's weird that only you and I are around this summer (at least most of the time) on the Off-topics section. We should create another thread to attract more people

this morning I noticed that one of my cats lost weight (it probably happened in the last few days). I felt so guilty and told myself off saying "you've been neglecting everything these days; yourself, your cats, your house, your boyfriend... hmm what else, there was one more thing.. what's that?" then I realised I was thinking of this thread. Just because we joked about it in that way, I stupidly registered that in my head

Any creative arts PhD candidates here?

The minimum word-count for any humanities, social science or art thesis at my university is 40000 words. This applies to my PhD as well. On top of that I have the practical element (artworks, prototype and a public exhibition). My initial proposal was for 50% theory and %50 practice. But I ended up with full thesis where the theory is supported with practical elements. I think I will need to put a percentage on it, and I don't think I could go more than %20 practice and %80 theory as some of my practice work ended up counting towards my experiments. It's very strange because I feel like I am doing 2 PhDs.

Shall I do a PhD?

I see.. I check the forum from latest messages section, which shows all sections in one list. I think most people do that too, but you're right. It might get read by more people that way.

The forum is strangely quiet this week though. I wonder if everyone has gone on holiday or something

why did you post exactly the same question a few hours later? There was already a response to your question, you are just duplicating threads.

It sounds like a real dilemma. First of all, congratulations for the offer. It sounds really good, and from the way you describe your future research environment I can imagine it would be a difficult decision.

I would say go for it. But it entirely depends on what you want to get out of this research experience. I am about to finish my PhD (well, at least the funding is about to end) and I feel very happy with my decision when I look back. Even though I realise how badly it effected my past career (i.e the potential of getting paid less than I used to, having to start from lower positions etc.)

Please don't let the horror stories you read on this site affect your decision. If you look at some of the replies on those "why nobody talks about their positive experiences" threads that we get so often on this forum, you would see that we all love our work and happy with the decision to do a PhD.

My research combines creative design and technologies; and uses artworks as research tools. It has a practical element. However it is not one of those practice-based projects where you don't have to write a thesis. I have to write full thesis and present the practical elements and use them to support my theories. Personally I don't agree with practice-only research where you can get away with writing a 10k-word lousy report instead of a thesis. And some of the doctoral art students I know thinks they shouldn't even have to write the report, they say the artwork (outcomes) can be enough to convey the theory .

The link Goods sent is quite good by the way. I like their work generally.

bad parents though... 9 turkeys on one day, no food at all next day. On top of all that, H hasn't been around to look after its other needs.

I wonder if everyone's gone on holiday?
