How can I get funding?

you either:

- put a proposal together asap (in some cases it doesn't have to be an in-depth one

- apply to scholarships that come as part of a project (in that case you would only need to write a statement explaining why and what part of this project would be relevant to your ideas etc.

As you have already published a paper, supervisors would shortlist you as long as your research project is appropriate. I would contact supervisors first, and see what they say.

what do you call yourself?

PhD Researcher on my university business card, or job applications. But if I'm applying for student discounts etc, I call myself PhD student

lollerskates, in this type of funding (i.e. the University secured the funding from a research council for a broad topic) they won't have to submit an application on behalf of you. They will only select the PhD student and allocate the funding to them. That's why I was saying you should keep an eye on PhD positions advertised with funding throughout the summer (or in some University's it can be any time of the year).

yes 3rd year. The reason I use final year is because it is the final year of my funding, with no possible extension after the end of August. I'll try my best to finish writing up by then, but it looks like an impossible task.

Yes, research council deadlines have passed, but universities still advertise their departmental funding, or funding secured from HEFCE etc.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck with your work. You can always try raising some money from other charitable organisations and your department once you start your MRes.

I'm on my final year, funding ends in August(don't wanna say which uni, feeling paranoid ).

Have you been keeping an eye on that academic jobs site? Good luck with your applications. Who knows, you might be able to secure a funded place, instead of the MRes (unless you prefer the MRes of course). June is not too late to submit applications.

mine is use of haptic technologies in HCI, and inclusive design (in museums)

Are you more interested in Psychology? UCL has a great HCI group as part of computing and psychology departments. I wonder if they are still advertising PhDs.

no problem... I just thought it would be useful as it sounds like multi-disciplinary research (including design and computers, where an HCI-related proposal could be submitted)

I think it did. It looks like a extremely happy person with a turkey hat, and wearing a green dress with lots of accessories, carrying a picnic basket on his arm while siging "ok" with his/her hand of the same arm

PhD Interview number of applicants

For mine, there were 8 shortlisted for 2 places. They couldn't interview everyone as there were too many applications. I applied to a couple of other Universities around the same time, one did the shortlisting on the phone, then invited shortlisted candidates for an interview (don't know how many).

I totally agree with that statement. But I still think it would be something more Christmas-related than a useless actor (actor?). And I know that everyone has been hiding the smiley's shortcut from me. Why oh whyyyy? I promise, I won't over-feed the forum. Just tell me.
