employment after the PhD (there is life after the PhD!)

I'm looking for jobs in the museum industry too, but the hierarchy is as big as in the academy and the pay is s**t.

wasted the whole day sorting out the problems with my computer and filling out job application forms. I wonder if my thesis would write itself.

Well, at least I am winning...

Whatever it is,it has to be something to make your PhD worthwhile in my opinion.

A few years ago I left my well-paying job on a career break to do my masters. Then instead of going back, I decided to do a PhD. Now I find myself in the same dilemma. I am now looking for jobs for September because my funding ends in August. If I stay in the academia, it looks like I will have very limited options. The pay is so low, in a way it hurts to know that I'll get 10k less than what I used to earn. If I go back to my industry, I'll feel like I've given up for money. I can't seem to find any fellowships, I really want to do something related to my PhD. I don't want to start from zero as a trainee in academia, on the other hand I don't want to end up starting with a high salaried job that wouldn't need a PhD in the first place. Grrrr this is so annoying. I have sent applications to 6 jobs that I really like (related to my PhD and pays good), let's see what happens.

threats & promises: that would make a nice soap opera title (sorry, I mean "continuing drama" as they call it these days )

Does being Married affect funding?

I am! I was just trying to be supportive, that's all.

oh sorry, you already said you don't have a student account.

In that case, applying for a graduate account somewhere would be a good idea as jo131278 suggested, you can then open a student account in October.

Is your current account a student account? If so, its terms should apply for another year at least (i.e if you had an interest-free overdraft, that should remain interest-free etc.). I would talk to the bank manager and explain. So they can keep your existing terms and conditions for another few months until you become student again. But if it isn't a student account, you may not be able to open one until October.

I am with Smile bank and they are very approachable when things get complicated.

Monobass, as kronkodile said, the scholarships aren't means tested so your partner's income won't affect your bursary. However the government benefits are. Therefore they are not comparable; not same situation.

I don't understand why you think being married makes you unemployable. And why do you think you are getting away with PhD? Please correct me if I misunderstood. I have a feeling like someone with bad intentions gave you horrible ideas. You have every right to work and undertake research just like anyone else, as long as you are qualified and good at it. There are other married PhD students on this forum. I remember talking to some (and marriage was never an issue).
