reading a boring book makes me drift into other thoughts rather than sleep, so I end up staying awake thinking. That's why I read something fun and easy.

Dear Piglet, just to add something... One of my supervisors is 39, he came back to academia after working in the private industry for 3 years at the age of 30. Now he is the head of the research team that he formed at our university and the principal lecturer of the subject he is teaching.

What you are experiencing at the moment is temporary. I can understand the situation of being stuck in your city doesn't help. But it will all get better. I think you should apply for some teaching positions at universities and adult education schools; as well as applying for some high-level (research or other) positions at the private sector.

exercise is the best thing. But if I still feel too anxious to sleep, I take natural camomile tablets (they are stronger than the tea) and read some comic books (or something else that is different than my research and fun).

what you do should not define you.There are all types of people doing all types of jobs. PhD researchers aren't any different. People are people; arriving to simple conclusions through basic analyses is not acceptable even in the most foolish research projects. So I would ignore those comments totally.
