Trying to deal with my isolation

Hi dariusz. There is a link on the left menu on this forum. If you go to the Links section, there is "PhD Students Chat Room" link under "Whilst undertaking your PhD" section. They meet regularly, and you can stay in touch with them via email and msn group, for the chat times. There is one email on Sundays usually to let people know about the schedule. Good luck.

Corinne, we don't (and can't) always stick to the title of the thread but sometimes drift away and pick up things from individual posts and write our opinions about it in this forum. Therefore, I don't think Otto was doing anything wrong. PinkNeuron has every right to mention her day job; and Otto has every right to give his opinion on this subject. To be honest it is a topic that is very much open to discussion, and I think Otto made a very important general comment about this subject, without being judgemental to PinkNeuron. At least that's how I felt when I was reading this thread.

I use EndNote for images too. I have a separate library for images that are not part of the references, but my own for my research. You can attach images and add as much information as you want on EndNote. Images are searchable and manageable just like references.

takes ages though. Longer than publishing in journals. It took my friend 8 months to write the chapter, then 1 year passed with the editor sending back and forth for amendments etc... Then it took another year to actually take it to the print. Now her chapter is in a book but she is not even working on that project any more. Recently a professor asked to see publications and ignored this one because it was not related to her current research (although the topic is similar).

how to get through the sleeeeepiness...!

It could be psychological and I can really relate to feeling sleepy all the time because of boredom. But you can really find a way around this problem. Exercise didn't help me in the beginning but after a while I realised that it was my fault, I was not eating well. Now exercise works. Do you have a window in your office? Lack of oxygen also causes sleepiness. Are you not sleeping well at night? Do you wake up earlier than you should and go back to sleep (o you live with someone that wakes up a couple of hours before you for example)? Because going back to sleep in the morning can make you feel tired later on. Or do you find yourself more productive later on in the day or at night time?

short term solution: Fill your hands with cold water, bend down to the sink like you are washing your face and keep the water over your eyes for a few seconds. Repeat few times. Also, drink fruit juice.

long term solution: exercise

Thank you very much for the replies.

bakuvia, that's how I've done and cited with author, year in brackets as the rest of the citations and put the full info on references (added a few more fields to "Figure" type in EndNote). But I was given different advice by different academics. One of them is that you cannot list the image details in references, but just list it under the images/illustrations section only and refer to it with a title (i.e Figure 2.1). Then someone said just put a footnote. Hmmm.. confused.

orian, don't you think that would be a bit patronising? I don't think examiners would appreciate brownnosing (apologies if the word is not appropriate for the forum).

Unless you are joking of course, and I didn't get the joke... Then sorry for criticising your answer.

Hi. I would like to use an image (graph) from a book in my thesis. I've got permission from the publishers. It is from an edited book, and I am already citing the author in the same paragraph that I will be using the image in. Do I then separately add the image to my references, or use a footnote with all the information?

I have conflicting advice on this one, so I am confused. Can you help? Thanks...
