Confessions: Things that you cannot believe you started doing...

oh no! I also realised that I started narrating my own life since starting this PhD. It's a bit like reporting back to yourself in your head. That's scary. Has anyone watched Lucky Luke when they were kids? I'm talking about the sort of narration that Lucky Luke does.

Is it worth applying for a Postdoc job, with nothing published?
4

I know we talked about a similar thing before, but I couldn't find the thread on the forum search.

I have presented my work at several conferences and workshops, but never published anything. Now the person who is going to decide whether or not they are interested in my work wants to see a published paper, before I submit my official application for the postdoc job. I feel a bit embarrassed to send an unpublished paper to him. Do you think it is possible to move to a postdoc position without publications?

When I go to student events and conferences, only Oxbridge students (ok, only the guys in this case) tie their sweaters around their neck, like in the 80s. Can you picture it? (I don't mean every guy from Oxbridge does this, but I think I have a point )

WHAT A DEPRESSING FORUM!
4

Every so often we get someone criticising exactly the same thing, without paying attention to the good bits. And sometimes we do get people listing the positive experiences just because they assume it is a different thing to do so. I don't think this forum is depressing at all. It is one place where we can share experiences and get advice when things go wrong (and when things go wonderfully well). If you look at the off-topic section, you would see that we also have fun. And every other day there are threads reporting events that make all of us so happy; things like passing vivas, making up with supervisors, achieving goals etc.

applications for conference funding - would you include cruises?
4

In my experience, these things always receive last minute cancellations, and the organisers don't mind letting a few students attend the events for free. I was quite lucky at the last 3 conferences I attended. I didn't have to pay for any of those extras including banquet dinners and sightseeing. So I suggest not to try to fool your university (because they always watch the budget so carefully) but see how it goes in the last minute. Try to attend at least one of those things with people though. Good fun

Anyone interested in tutoring?
4

Thanks for posting the tutoring ad here Esenboga. I don't know if it's against the forum rules. I hope it's not. In my opinion, it shouldn't be as you are not trying to sell anything to anyone, but just letting other graduate students know about an opportunity. If it was my subject area, I would definitely be interested. Why not?
