I have done a project as part of my PhD. After I completed it, I presented the project and some of the findings at 1 international conference, 1 national conference and 1 national research workshop. But I only had to submit an abstract to all of these event. A full paper was not required. The project and my research topic was mentioned (with my name) in a well-known magazines' article and on a local newspaper. I now worry that someone else might publish this work before me. The reason I am paranoid is because a paper for this work has not been published, and I don't know if the inclusion of abstract in the conference website and booklet would count as official proof that I went public with the project first. I hope my question makes sense. Thank you for your opinions in advance.

and i forgot to say, it works. You can always visit them at their institute once every two months or something like that, and keep in touch via emails.

it is common to have an external supervisor. I don't think they could be the director of studies though, they can be first or second supervisor depending on your university's rules. At some universities, the director of studies is also the first supervisor, in that case the external can't be your first. There are some politics involved, so you cannot just bring someone in, you have to follow procedure.

multidisciplinary aspect of the research opens more funding opportunities. More departments to apply to, more options with research councils etc.

sorry to hear that. Such a horrible experience. But it sounds very familiar to me. First step is to tell them how this makes you feel and you do not want this to continue (in a better language of course ) and if that doesn't work, take one of them off of your list and get another supervisor, even if this means an external supervisor in your team. I think the first step would be to identify supervisors/universities suitable. Have you considered applying for full-time funded places by the way?

About funding: If you are going to apply for funding separately (i.e the place does not come with pre-agreed funding), then you will need to secure the place first with a University. Research council funding is usually attached to the studies and you apply with the support from that university, therefore you will not be able to apply to the council more than once. So, you can apply to as many universities as you want for a place, but you can only apply to a research council once you accepted one of these places. Does it make sense? But you can submit funding applications to other funding bodies, such as charities etc.

But when I add as suffix in Microsoft word, it automatically gets re-formatted to author-year. I'll read the help pages again, maybe I am misunderstanding.
