PhD (Distance or Online)

Nimrod81, you are right. The only time the research student needs to register as a distant student is when the student lives further than the max distance allowed in the regulations book. This is usually around 40 miles, if I'm not wrong.

yes, they do attend regular face-to-face supervisory meetings. I think most universities call this distant research, rather than online. Online facilities available and students get access to online PhD Symposiums etc.

Are you going to work in your PhD during the summer?

On my contract, it says 35 working days per year. I've never claimed any time off officially.

I agree with you on part-time PhDs being difficult. I can't imagine myself working full-time and doing a PhD research at the same time. Some members on this forum are Pt phd students and I admire their determination. However, from what I gather from people's experiences, called distant or not, part-time PhDs don't require regular attendance anyway.

When it comes to success rate however, I can't agree with you. This totally depends on the subject. Also, the research facilities available to the researcher etc.

Otto, not everyone is as lucky as you and I to obtain full funding. Besides, some people don't want to give up their current jobs etc. I have met part-time phd students, some of my friends are combining part-time full-time years according to their budget. Why are you against the idea? Only a month ago I met a professional museum director from abroad, doing a part-time MPhil with the University of Leicester and she was very happy with it as she could do both her work and studies.

For example, I am not doing an online PhD, it's not even called distant but I still don't have to be at my University all the time. My uni is 3 hours away from me. Most of my contacts are in London anyway, and I can manage most of my work from home. It is full-time, it is funded. I've never had any problems with that.

Academician, I was offered a PhD place by Open University (not distant though, based in Milton Keynes) 3 years ago. I now regret not taking it up as they have better facilities than my current University. It's worth checking if they accept distant students. I live in London too. I can't see any reason why you won't find something suitable for you in UK. Are you looking for full-time or part-time?

(my message was too long, i'll continue here):

I've met supervisors at different UK universities with students from abroad. I know this can be easier for part-time students, but I some of these students are full-time distant students. It's not the same situation but I am undertaking a fully funded PhD research away from my university town. Although I live in the same country, I only need to see my supervisors once every 2 months.

Also, have you checked the Open University? Good luck.

Assuming you are looking for a serious answer, and you are not trying to buy your PhD, I would like warn you about the Belford jokes we all tend to make every now and then on this forum. Universities like that one are not real universities and they sell so-called degrees.

There are many (proper/genuine) Universities in the UK that would allow you to undertake your research in your home country and pay regular visits to your supervisor(s) a few times a year. I've met some distant students (living abroad) from Leeds Metropolitan and Sheffield Universities at conferences....
