Apparently almost 25% of call centre staff in Britain have at least a first Degree.  I am sure we all know of people with Degrees working in areas well below their ability, and for wages well below the National average.

Seriously, I think if the changes for progress never come, and they struggle constantly to get secure employment - was it worth the money? 

It is all very well MPs, Ministers etc saying 'Well they can pay back their student loans out of the higher wages they are going to earn in these future well paid jobs'.

What if many Graduates never get these well paid jobs?  If these well paid jobs were never there to get in the first place?

I think it is important to keep away from the trouble areas, to not even go to have a look out of a sense of history, desire to investigate etc..

If trouble comes to you it is different, you could not avoid it.  But people can be affected by just being in the general area of some incident.

You have got a really interesting list of possible activities there.

Like several people have said - you ought to claim JSA as soon as you can - to make sure all your Nat Insurance contributions are up to date.

One of the items on your list - selling your books - is not something I would recommend though.  They will be really precious to you in years to come.

Number 20 on your list is very important indeed.

And sometimes an vacancy can occur where you had never considered one.

There is a lot to consider.  It has to be something you really like and are good at. 
You will also need to consider what purpose you want it for, eg to help you with a career - what do you hope to get out of doing it? Will it help you to find employment or not?
Also bear in mind where-abouts in Germany you would be living, what the University's strengths are, and how you would finance your course.
You need to investigate as many possibilities as possible, before making up your mind.

In your situation, I would go for it.  Otherwise the nagging thought 'Well I could have done it, but I didn't', may continue to vex you.

And now that you're more mature, you can bring a more mature viewpoint.

Am not in your required age range, but work with a young lady who is. Her sister in law posts nasty comments about her on that site, on a regular basis.

Although I advise my colleague to just ignore it, it makes her very upset.

That site can be really harmful.

Why do Universities not show the fees they intend to charge for particular courses on the first page of their ads, along with duration, entry requirements etc.

Some do, but many do not.  It can be really vexing to have to search through their home sites, and still not have a clear idea of how much a particular course is going to cost.

Is it because they think we will all be frightened away?

You have been unlucky getting such a bad tempered supervisor.  But that is his problem. It is not your fault. I would not let it put me off doing the PhD. 

Are there any societies at the University or town/city that you are living in that you would be interested in joining. EG If you are from China, are there any Chinese societies locally that you could join? What about sport - eg swimming.  Would you be interested in taking up a sport? This could provide you with a new group of contacts, away from the high pressure graduate program.  It would also help to maintain your health.

If it is a great project I would do my best to stick at it. He is only one person, and is probably bad tempered with other people as well.  It will not just be with you.

Asking your friend to make sure no one goes into your room is a good idea.

If you have valuable, easily portable items, I should try to conceal them carefully as well. You never know! Just make sure that you remember where you put them.

By the way - if you have not got insurance for your things - it's worth considering.

I did my Masters at Birmingham - a long time ago.  When I went there it was great.

I can not comment about the other two Universities because I have no experience of them.

If you need to earn money working part time while studying, a big city like Birmingham offers more opportunities.

However, if you would be much better off financially (funded) in one University than the others, that is something you really need to bear in mind.  It's easier to get a good result in your Masters Degree if you are not always worrying about money.
