Equal opportunities...Just pretence!
B

Guys, this issue has been puzzling me alot! Ponder this, a foreign research student, working on a topic that in essence is investigating issues affecting the local (British) population. However, this student is charged 3 times higher the fees solely on the basis he/she is an international student not forgetting that whatever he is working on will eventually be used locally. Isn't this bureaucratic? Talk of the big fish always wanting to swallow smaller fish!!! Any thoughts on this? :-s

Industrial Case Studentship
B

Hi Everyone,

Is there an overseas (other than UK/EU) student in this list who's on an industrial case studentship? I am really in a dilemma! I got in touch with an exceptionally good Professor late last year and I approached him for potential supervision starting later this year. We proposed a topic together and unfortunately the university wasn't able to fund the topic but he later applied for a case studentship together with a company he occasionally consults for and allas! he got funding! Good news so far! However, here comes the bomb....the funding was provided by the EPSRC and as far as I understand I need to show I have a connection with the UK. The only connection with the UK I have so far is having done my Msc in the UK! He's yet to talk to the EPSRC people and find out but the University and in particular the department really wants me on board since they think I am particularly capable to handle the topic and I also like the topic since we proposed together. Is there anyone who's been in this kind of situation? especially 'so called' overseas students? Will the UK ever stop segregating students from where they come from (in particular research students)? What's your advice guys?BTW: I also have another opportunity in another university where I am funded only upto EU/UK level. What should I do?

Hi,

Is there anyone who's an international student working on an industrial case studentship? I understand there is a residency restriction towards this but I wanted to know if there is anyone on this program.

Statistics

Hi Everyone,

Is there statistics available in the UK of PhD students who successfully finish their PhD (i.e. graduate) on time i.e. 3 years.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

NB: Just asking since I am slated to start my PhD in Sept. 2009.

Hi Stressed,

Thank you for your email! I am also hoping that I could get something within the department. My strategy is to literally keep my eyes and ears open and grab any chance that comes along! Otherwise, I really do like the project and it's eventually what I've been yearning for all a while! 9-10 hrs a week would be sufficient for me.

One last thing-Politics this time! - Why does the UK charge International fee especially to research students? Isn't the research we do good enough for the UK economy? I did two visiting semesters during my MSc in Spain and France and there is nothing like International fee- actually, in the rest of Europe, students are students no matter their country of origin!:-s

Hi PhDbug,

Thank you for your reply. I am also planning to do around 9-10 hrs a week and I should be comfortable that way. My envisaged supervisors seem to be understanding and they are very much aware about my case. My PhD is in Engineering.

Hello guys,

Now, I've just finished my two year full-time Msc and I've been awarded a part-PhD studentship by a University in UK. My biggest worry is, I am an International student and I have to foot part of the school fees from my studentship so will end up living on residues. I am planning to take up a part-time job to raise at least £250 every month to supplement and I believe I will be stable in that way. Questions: Is there anyone who's in the same situation here? How easy or difficult is it? My supervisor is aware of my situation but he's not able to help any much. Please, advice...

Thank you

International Fees-UK
B

Hi Kubaff, Thank you for your advice. Well I have written a mail to the british council asking for advice. My studentship is provided by a UK organisation so definately they wouldn't consider moving it to germany or the rest of europe. I have studied in France before, and their treatment towards international students it's incredible! I would say, they are not as the British (abit annoying right?). Well, I am planning to apply for more studentships within the EU or the US and incase i do get another option I will just forfeit the British studentship and move on to another country. Otherwise, thank you for your advice.

BTW: Unfortunately, I do not think that my project is really very helpful to the developing world since it's on Neuroscience Technology which really needs the developed economies to flourish.

Regards:-s

Hi,

Well I clearly understand that....but my question was rather on finance and funding and not on the viva. I do have absolute confidence in myself and the PhD Interview committee awarded the PhD studentship on the basis of my previous record. Actually, I the UK you do not need an Msc to undertake a PhD so an Msc is a plus.

Mortgages and PhD

Hi Guys,

Since this thread is all about money issues, I have some queries here. I am finishing my 2 year Msc in UK in June and all through it has been fully funded and I've been getting a monthly stipend. However, I have been awarded a PhD by one of the universities in UK starting September 2009 and the PhD is funded upto Home/EU fees level meaning I have to find ways of covering the difference which is around 7,000 pounds per year. Is there anyone in this forum who has been in the same situation? Secondly, are there any ideas of what I would do? I have totally ruled out myself paying the difference since I do not have much savings with me and my family isn't in a position to offset the difference.

Is there a way I can negotiate a scholarship/bursary with the University to waive a sizeable part of the fees difference? I will surely appreciate if someone gives me some insights
:-)8-)
