Do you ever get snippy at your supervisor?
B

Excellent outcome Lostinoz. Very pleased for you. But do try for a calmer path in the future. You don't want to get into this situation again ;-)

404: I typically get 15 (!) hours sleep a day. But I have a really nasty neurological illness, and that's led me to sleep more and more over the years. My record is over 17 hours a day. Occasionally I drop to 12. If I have to I can last for a bit of a day on just 4 hours sleep at night. But normally I'd need to go back to sleep to get many more hours for my brain to be happy.

I've just been up, ordering final hard bound copies of my thesis :-) My corrections were approved yesterday, just over a week after my viva, so the next step is to order the fancy final version. Unfortunately my university closed its bindery a few years ago, so I've had to for a long-distance ordering option. But fingers crossed it will work out ok. I am using a specialist thesis bookbinder. I think my supervisor will faint when he sees the number of copies to be signed ;-) But I need 2 for the uni, and 2 for supervisors, and 2 for parents, and 1 for me. And after all that I thought I should get 1 spare, just in case I ever wish I'd got 1 more!

Do examiners already know if they will pass or fail you before the viva?
B

I was told that the examiners largely make up their mind before the viva, but if they have uncertainties about the result (for example the amount of corrections required etc.) they can make the final decision in the viva. Also in a borderline case the viva can obviously help to swing things.

I was told the result at the start of my viva which was great. So was another student in my department a few weeks earlier. I'd been told by another member of staff that this would never happen, but my supervisor says in his experience (at least in my subject) it happens quite often.

Does your research have personal significance to you?
B

Quote From keenbean:

I also have long term memory damage due to the electroconvulsive therapy I used to receive as treatment, and I still struggle with this- it sometimes feels like my memory isn't much better than that of my participants!

That strikes rather a perverse chord with me. The interest that prompted me to do the PhD is one I can no longer pursue much due to brain damage from my progressive neurological disease. Yet I have persevered in researching other people pursuing the same interest 200 years ago. Rather ironic!

Does your research have personal significance to you?
B

My topic arose directly out of my own lifelong interest, but I had the chance to study similar people with similar interests 200 years ago. So, yes, it is rather personal to me. I was lucky to be able to design my PhD project, as a humanities student, then get AHRC funding to fund it all as well. All for a self-built project.

A few viva prep questions :-)
B

I took in my list of corrections and handed it out at the start of my viva. My examiners were very grateful. So think positive thoughts.

Good luck with your viva next week!

I agree with the cold turkey suggestion. Otherwise you could just get into a perpetual loop of checking his Facebook page etc.

Sending you lots of virtual hugs.

Do you ever get snippy at your supervisor?

I agree with what Sue has said. And another thing to bear in mind is that at my university the supervisor has to fill out and sign the "Intention to Submit" form, and has to sign the thesis before submission. I wouldn't have been able to submit without my supervisor's agreement to all this, never mind their support in helping to make my thesis reach the required standard.

Do try to build bridges Lostinoz, however hard it may be.

That's wonderful news Teek :) Very pleased for you. Glad the GP listened so thoroughly. Hope the consultant helps too.

Thanks Cakegirl. Yes nearly there. Should be sleeping, but decided 2 more of my captions need to be changed, so have been tweaking them in bed.

Thanks for expanding on the 'weird feeling' comment. I went through a similar thing, though mine happened over just a very short time, as everything came together really fast at the end. How near are you to submitting?

Good luck with your work tonight.

Lost my mojo

If your mood is that bad you may need professional help to lift your spirits. Normally I'd recommend seeing a counsellor at your uni, or going to your GP, or even both. This is very important. Don't assume that your mood will lift without this sort of outside intervention.

I've had far too many long periods where I've done nothing at all (I'm talking months here!), and have had to return to the thesis/research far too many times. I always did this by drawing up a to-do list of things to get on with, ranging from big ambitious things, to lots of small ones. Then I would start - slowly - working through the list, picking off the easiest (or least unappealing?!), doing them, and crossing them off my list. That would boost my confidence, and slowly I'd get back into a rhythm again.

Sending you virtual hugs and wishing you well.

Just checking out after another hour's work on post-viva corrections. All captions checked, changed type where appropriate, renumbered, and in-text references checked/updated. Have to add sources to all my figures/tables next, but that's for another day. Nearly there ...

Glad you're full-time currently Sue. Poor you with the supervisor feedback. Still, as you say, the recommended revisions will make your thesis as robust as possible, so, yes, keep going!

Nice to hear from you Sue! I'm about to sign off now. Just backing up my changes to Dropbox and the usual email to the uni and my desktop computer at home.

Then it's bed :) Good luck to both of you - and anyone else out there - working over the next few hours.

Good luck with the last-push Cakegirl! And thanks for the kind congrats.

Good idea re a list of changes. I'm thinking of doing that, but also want to include a separate file of just the changed pages, so my convenor can quickly scan through that and see the changes. I don't think it's going to be that much work.

I've just about gone through all the captions, checking all are the correct type and full enough.

So I think that will just about do for me for tonight. Can only work for an hour or so at a time, and this has been a productive last hour.
