HA! You are mixed race?! Then I feel compelled to finish this thread regardless of this race issue stuff. It really annoys me when mixed race people pretend to be black. Why do you go on about black issues as if you are black? Don't just plonk yourself in another demographic because it will give you more victim status. Get over yourself and get on with your research. Stop moping about how tough it is as yeah, as you can see, we all know what the issues are love.I'm pretty sure my white mother would be hurt and offended if I ever described my self as black. Jeeeez...

To be honest with you Jenny, I think that you have probably come to the wrong place. On this forum we tend to talk about the things that unite us, not those that divide. By asking to speak to only those who are black you are being a bit exclusive yourself. This is why I feel it is a race issue.

As someone of mixed race I can say that I have experienced issues similar to yourself, but mainly from the black community. So, stop and think - you maybe experiencing prejudice, but maybe you are actually singling yourself out.

What Ilove about this forum is that mostly we understand each other and its fine to have an opinion.

hi Jenny, I didn't really want to get into this, but you are talking crap. How do you know none of us are black? We maybe simply choosing not to disclose this information. You obviously have some issues. Might I suggest concentrating on your research and less on your colour. That way you can show others a good example.

Hey guys, wow, this thread got very serious very quickly! Well, Jenny, something interesting I have noticed is that you cannot talk about black people as one group. I have noticed that there are many more African black students at university, and the real problem here is with young, poor, Afro-Carribean boys. I have worked on schemes with some of these boys, and it is very very tough for them. They don't see that education has much to offer them in their life situation. I think if we want to get more Afro-Carribeans into higher education, the work needs to be done within the communities, the problem isn't necessarily with universities. Without proper support from communities and families, I don't think much will change.

Hey Juno, cheers! You're totally right of course. I've developed a bit of a "sod 'em" attitude! Its normally people in poor relationships themselves who feel the need to have a go!

People who don't understand

Hey, I know exactly what you mean! Its particularly grating when you know just how hard you are working, and would love nothing more than to see friends rather than being up to your eyeballs in data and papers. Grrrrrr!! Bring them all into your office and show them what hard you have to do!!! and if you don't cut you some slack, shoot them!

DanB, poems from beyond the forum?! I actually love you, legend!!! Although all you had to say about me was that I had a bad day, I feel a little disappointed. Come back DanB we miss you!

Hi H by the way, did you decide on a honeymoon destination? (Cuba Cuba Cuba!!)

am I crazy?

hmm, its a little crazy...I guess I would rather spend money on beautiful things, but if its going to make your life easier, then maybe its worth it!

Having a really horrid day...

Hey guys, that you very much for all of your comments. I have had a special word with my friend Father Christmas and he assures me he will give you all something lovely for Christmas.

I am having a better day today. Going to just try and get on with it until the end of term as its not too far away now. Hopefully going to get away from it all for a few days then. God, I don't even like them but now can't stop thinking about mince pies...crazy!!!

Actually, to be fair to my partner, I think he gets pretty fed-up of the nudging and winking that other male members of staff shower him with. A senior lecturer congratualted him once saying, "bloody good for you, I really think there ought to be much more of that sort of thing", see, its not people like us that give these relationships a bad name, its the few silly girls and pervy profs that ruin it for the rest of us

I am in total agreement that you end up being treated more stringently rather than favourably. I've moved departments for my postgrad which I think has made a difference. I think people have become a lot more relaxed about the whole thing.

Although last friday we went for a staff meal, and there were a few members of staff were pretty new. After enquiring about my PhD etc., they said, "so, how did you two meet". It gets to the point where you get bored of tip-toeing rounf the situation, so I said something like "oh, well, I seduced him at the end of my first year". I have never seen a person in real shock until that point! Luckily, everyone else at the table thought I was just being humerous.

So, did you get married after you'd graduated, or during your masters?

oh my god! Congratulations indeed Dr.DJ! You do realise that you are now within your rights to continue getting drunk for an entire week, if not longer...
