Tell me about it. Although getting a 1st didn't actually help my situation... Its really weird, we've been together for about 3 years, and he still gets a bit tetchy if he sees a senior member of staff walking down the road.

I'm the same, older men have always done it for me (my bfriend is significantly older than me)and if you get on great, then it just isn't a problem really. I was weird with his friends from work for a little while, but its amazing how quickly people find something else to gossip about, and I was accepted very quickly. Bring on the ring I say...!

Hey! My personal statement was about one A4 page long. It is your chance to let your prospective university know what it is that drives you. Your CV and your research proposal and references will tell them whether or not you're capable of achieving a PhD, but, if you read some of the posts on this forum you will see that doing a PhD can be very stressful. I think the university will want to see what drives you; whether you love your subject enough to get you through the rough patches. Say someting about what it is that makes you so interested, and then where you see your PhD leading. Best of luck, let us know how it goes!

I'm having such a horrid day, you know the ones: you get up in the morning and realise very quickly that you shouldn't have bothered. I'm on a 1+3 which my two supervisors believe is basically a 4 year PhD (I've already been told that I should be doing my MSc in my "spare time"). I had a meeting with the two of them today, and I just had to sit there while they argued about the direction that they believe I should be going in. This culminated in one saying to the other "well if you think that I think Bobby should just transfer and work wit you alone". I was mortified.

The other supervisor then went on to ask why I hadn't conducted a full lit search into an area. She didn't think that my MSc demands were a good enough excuse.

And I hate my housemates. I want to cry, give up and go home.

Is it bad form to wear a university crested jumper from your old uni in the office of your new uni? See, its tho most comfy thing I own, and with the weather being so drab and horrid (I find when it rains its pretty depressing in London) and me feeling sorry for myself, I want to snuggle up! But do you think it looks a bit, I don't know, rude?!

Well, this wasn't rude so much as weird. My friend who is also supervisor to 3 PhDs is pretty stressed at the mo, and on wed afternoon, she said that she'd brought in a flask of wiskey, to "nip the edge off the afternoons". Then she asked me if I thought this was weird/unacceptable. I said that I thought it was a little. Then she said to me, "well, do you think wine would be better?"!!!

God, I have had such an unproductive week. I am at the stage where I'm thinking, sod it. Why wait til later. Let's all go and get a glass of wine now...
