How frustrating.  The only thing that struck me was that meeting someone in person, looking them in the eyes, makes it a lot more difficult to say no.

So, with that in mind could you attend a University open day, conference or any other event where Professors in your field are likely to gather.  

Another less conventional idea would be advertising yourself on University / field relevant web sites asking for a supervisor ?   Do people do that ?  Although, that said, I still think in person is far more persuasive.

Hello all.

I'm completing a job application for a lecturer post, my first, and wondered about typical form.

Am I right in thinking that publications, conferences are one of the big plus points for any candidate ? Given dreaded RAE ratings etc.

If this is the case, then do you note work in progress? In what form ? Title, summary, maybe target journal, expected submission date ?

Any other advice on application forms would be gratefully received. What gets you through the door with botty on hot seat ? What features have the best applications got ?

I think the above could be summed up with "HELP" :-)

Agree with JC,  do not pull out. You have something worth listening to else you would never have got in the conference.  So, deal with this first.  Practice on your own, with others etc.. but remember you deserve to be there.   And you will regret a no-show.

After this is over you need to address the issue with your sup. I would try to gauge if this is his usual form,  talk to your second sup if you have a good relationship there but then you will need to talk to him. Calmly.  I would probably approach it in a "can you let me know if you are too busy to supervise me" kind of way. Not using those words but broach it from a non aggressive angle,  then assess the reaction. Follow this up with firmer approach if necessary, moving towards emails to have a record of what you've said.  Then.. if you've tried this I would ask for a transfer to another sup.  That's all you can do. 

What an awful experience though.  Let us know how the conference goes.  Best, Chuff

I had a conversation with one of my sups about expectations, got it out in the open.  The expectation was yes .. but as you eek towards the end you may wish to have that conversation again. All depends on the relationship you have with your sup.

Loyalty means a lot.

I would have a chat with your sup.. takes all the guessing out of it.

If so, why?

I've studied with them in the past and the ethos was very engaging, is this the pull ? or is there another one... like £.

You are worrying too much but you're about to submit and so you're allowed. ( rambling is a prerequisite for this site )

He sounds like the perfect sup to me.  He's read your work !   He commented on it in an informed and constructive manner, he told you your strengths and weaknesses and admitted some weaknesses of his own.   He reassured you that you've got a good writing style and appreciates that you're learning.

Boy.. you've found a gem.

How is your research going ? Are you enjoying it ? I supposed put simply are you answering your question, developing your field ?

If you're having a good time and making progress then in the grand scheme of a lifetime another six months or year of enjoying yourself, adding to the body of knowledge and being wonderfully self indulgent is no bad thing.

Please don't feel bad, enjoy it.. you've lasted 3 years ... :-)

If no to any of these then feel free to virtually slap me. It will make you feel better.

One of the Profs at the Uni said the latest version is an improvement on others, and he's happy with using it. I haven't tried it myself.

With RSI I would suspect its worth a try, heard its v painful.

Would you be able to try it out with amazon, 30 days money back apply on software?

Alternatively, would your uni have a version you could have as a student. I bought a few things i later realised i could have gone for free :-s so worth checking out.
