Congratulations on being asked, your sup must know something you don't. ;-)
You know you have to go for it.
For me, the only way i can do it is to be confident in my subject, and given that you are going to be talking on "your" subject - you'll be well away.
So as for hints and tips - what i do, practice on my own, practice with family / friends, then maybe colleagues or other who are not so friendly!, then let yourself go.
Plan the sessions so that you aren't doing that much talking, after all you're in control. Think of exercises , Q&A workshop style, there'll be loads of stuff on the net to give you a good idea.
But please, do go for it Jen ... in fact in have a quote on the wall in front of me. I just noticed.
Eleanor Roosevelt: "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do"
All the best, and come back and tell us about your first session ... Regards, Chuff
Hi Truuao,
Only agreeing with others on here ... don't you learn as much from positive or negative. As long as your method, approach etc is exemplary then it will provide as much of a steer for future work as positive results.
Are you getting more cheered up now ?

Hi EEE.
Not quite sure what your question is? but have you tried to get published at all?
There are a range of views on this, some sups seem to focus on the top tiers, and others on those more likely to get in. Although i'm not sure the two are exclusive. I got one in a lower tier and am now aiming for the top... my view is that they can only say no and then i aim lower.
You need to judge for yourself which you would be prefer. Is your sup hoping for co-author? If not, then its really up to you.
Best, Chuff
Hi 4matt.
I use Carbonite for online stuff, maybe the same as your dropbox. i use a HP 500 GB hard-drive, I also have 2 memory sticks, and a series of CD / DVDs where i back things up weekly. Not that i'm obsessed with backup.
As far as remember there wasn't much difference in the cost of hard drives when i bought one for my mum. She's got clickfree - idiot proof as the name suggests. i think it was 500Gb maybe £150.
Best and get backing up asap.

Hi Chris,
from what you've said.. top of the head stuff.. i would integrate them into the three chapters. I'm assuming they will support your other analysis.
Ultimately though, there is no right way. Its what's right for you, tells your story and allows you to best answer your question. Hope your sup will be able to provide guidance on specifics.
Best. Chuff
happy to "help" :$
It gets more tricky doesn't it.
I still think a straight conversation is the only way.
If you think you'd enjoy the job, don't know if you want to go into academia, its more money etc. then its "just" her stopping you.. you don't really know that she would be uppity. I understand that you have a pretty good inkling but... was it another advert that said "its good to talk".
The only thing I'm certain of though, is that the world will not end. Not over this anyway.
I'm going back to my one paragraph which has taken me all afternoon. god i could kill it.
Do you know the Michael Winner advert - "calm down dear" ? I love that and was the phrase that came to my mind when i read this post.
Although that said.. it took me ages to work out what I'd do... then I thought.
I would be upfront about it, tell her you've applied as a short term move, good experience, less travelling so therefore ( important point) gives you more time to concentrate on PhD.
Could you do the RA role on different terms / hours ?
Upshot is, I would discuss it with her even tell her your concerns about how she may feel and how much you appreciate her support. That way you haven't crossed her.
That said, relationship with sup is so blinking important.. so I would, short term, prioritise that if you do want to go into academia.
Am i contradicting myself now ? I wasn't confused before :-$
Right where's the coffee.
Hi Amy.
I think its walminskipeasucker who has the book on pdf. If you search the forum for the name "Tinkler" you should be able to confirm this, there's been a few posts on this.
I'm sure he won't mind you pm-ing him. He seems like a thoroughly nice chap. (up)
All the very best for your viva. Please come back and tell us all about it.
Hi AQ.
How wonderful to be "worrying" about these details ( me too) .. did you ever think you'd see the day :-)
In response, I have a view and i have no idea where from that the acknowledgements are added before final submission. As i say i have idea where i get this from.. but that is my plan.
I guess there could be a miraculous super-hero who sweeps in to help between one and t'other and if you've written your acknowledgements.. well it could be curtains ;-)
Have a good day / week etc. Chuff
Hi Sam,
I can only give you a generic prod ... so I will.
You first need to believe in yourself and then persuade others... the first is often tougher than the second.
First - focus on what you can do and not what you can't. Enthusiasm, commitment and determination are what you need to get a PhD. Have you got them, if so.. no problem.
Second - have a search around for Robert Cialdini's Art of Persuasion... once you have grabbed the first this will be easy.
Maybe others will be able to give you more practical advice :-)
Best. Chuff
Thanks Sneaks.
That's really helpful and a good middle ground.
I've just had really nice feedback from one of my sups... nice feeling.... few twiddles to do ... but nothing major.
How you getting on Sneaks ( and others) still on for submission by end of year ?
Chuff
Morning all,
A very practical question, if I may, if you are reproducing a Figure in your Conclusion Chapter that is also shown earlier in the thesis.. then would you re-number it say Figure 20, and state in text that it is a repeat of Figure 12 ?
Or would you simply state in text Figure 12 repeated below, and not specifically re-number the Figure ?
I'm edging towards not specifically renumbering it.. but .. confusion plus caffeine overload are setting in, so would be grateful for your views.
Thanks Chuff

Hear hear to all those who have responded to this thread, I will not waste my time repeating their comments. Especially given that I am hoping to submit shortly and have far better things to do.
However, I would like to ask you a question in light of yours below..
