Absolutely. I think it'll show the University that you are thinking about the future (with respect to publications) and have a clear plan for it.

I don't know much on this but anyway.....

You might have to explain that your work at this stage is confidential but surely there's something in your work that is publishable (conferences etc)at this stage, that you could submit to this University without being too specific and without giving too much away.

Wow, quite a few questions in there. I don't know where to start.

Well, if you've got an idea you're passionate about and have the go ahead to do it, then go for it. You might not have the full cooperation/resources available to you but you will definitely get some assistance from peers and other academics and i'm certain that you would acheive more satisfaction in the end working on your own stuff.

So far, my experience has been okay with Academics as i do not experience all those 'vices' they possess all the time. It would be frustrating if it was.

shelleyanne, the supervisor might not like that idea. I mean no supervisor would want to loose a student (well, maybe in some cases ) but MichaelA, you might just have to come clean as shelleyanne has pointed out. Its better that you are true to yourself and express this to your supervisor and those involed. If they ar human enough, they would understand.

Well kikat you need excercise that would cause your heart rate to increase- you won't get that from walking the dog. Try more active and involving excercises coupled with the advice from others in here. That might do the trick.

I share an open plan office (more like a converted gym) with about 20 others. however, the research students have little room filled with pcs where they can come in and do their work (it gets steaming in there after a few hours)

I think as PhD students one should put away that element of pride. Agreed, a non-PhDer might not know wha the heck you're on about but an advice is an advice.

From personal experience, i have learnt bits an pieces from people not related to my field in any way and are, quite frankly, scared of it. This should no stop anyone from receiving advice from someone who isn't doing a PhD.

In any case, an advice is an advice, it is your decision if you choose to accept it.
