You're welcom. I guess you have to address this quickly before it gets too much to handle. I don't know but have you tried speking to your supervisor or indeed other lecturers. I find out that that have a wealth of experience to draw upon which might be just what you need to get you through.

I am not in your situation but the only advice i can think of right now is that you're in the final lap of your phd, so just keep at it. Its alright to get stuck in but take occassional breaks (non-phd related) to clear your head. After all said and done, you'll reap the benefits.

Best wishes verdy.

Sylvester- I checked out the paper. They've even got equations!

With regards to the post, i just think it boild down to a lack of understanding of what we do. 'Civilians' need to take time to understand and appreciate it.

PhD stipends are a rip off!

Wow. I'm due to start my phd in a few months time and all this talk is making me think about my own future even more.

Any idea how many students fail in a Phd!!!??? :(
C

Hi swapzz,
I think you should concentrate more on the positive side of things e.g the immense benefit of doing a phd and your prospects afterwards not to forget your contribution to knowledge. I admit, a phd is not an easy endeavour but the rough times you will have to go through should not deter you or rather, make you paranoid about how many people actually fail their phd.

I would say, embrace the challenge and look forward to coming out in the end, successfully.

What is your thesis title?
C

Now that sounds impressive as well as the other title mentioned.

Mine, not so: Design for Manufacture of a Brushless Synchronous Servomotor. It invloves looking at all the aspect and design and manufacture to produce a motor that is 'greener'-consumes less power and emits less pollution. Starting some time this year.

Did you need TWO ACADEMIC referees in your application?
C

If you can get the referees, i don't see what your problem is.

Two months in

Hi Pam. I'm sorry to hear about your mum's ill health. With regards to your phd, i do not know if you'd or anyone would agree with me or not, but i think it's still early days. Its understandable that the first few months might be a bit hazy and you might lack a clear sense of direction but as time goes by, you will become more focussed anad things will begin to take shape. My advice would be to be patient and carry on.

Best wishes.

Postdoc / Fellowship after PhD

Introducing a new approach on the same subject sounds like continuation but depends on what angle you want to view the subject in and what new elements you are introducing. In any case, it would depend on whoever is reviewing your proposal.

I am confused
C

You're welcome.

At least you've started. I am still being tossed around and still waiting to start. I have thought about defecting more than once but i'll give them a little more time

Best wishes

Hi craz. I would advice that you exercise a bit more patience sice its only been two months. I am also in a, sort of, similar situation (as in i was told i would be able to start in february this yr but i can't 'cos of lack of funding) and its April.
