contingency...'if I pass'? or 'when I pass'
C

That's alright aliby. Personally, having the end in sight and the hope of passing it (with the work of course) does it for me

MPhil or PhD?
C

Me too. I got a first. I thought i would be registered as PhD but was told it'll have to be Mphil/PhD.
Personally, i think its a good idea to start from MPhil and transfer unto a PhD.

Why oh why does everything take soooo long

It does my head in as well. Just getting them to reply to my emails with soem info is another story entirely.

Supervisor publishing my data findings

Good one otto but don't let him/her find out

Supervisor publishing my data findings

I've observed a similar situation as well in my institution. I was having a meeting with my supervisor and read a publication in which the results were from phd student's research. He was put as the 3rd author.
Having said this, though it sounds unfair, i won't complain if that happened to me. If i have completed my phd and that happened, it might be a different story, but that's just my view.

contingency...'if I pass'? or 'when I pass'

You're right 404. I would say i am definitely a 'When i pass' person. But i think its not just enough to have the +ve attitude but also backing it up with ones efforts to ensure the pass. The 'if i pass' sounds like having a -ve attitude but i agree that some people might not want to sound cheeky.

IMO, always having a +ve attitude always helps, even when things seem otherwise

A worrying sign of the times...

It is true what golfpro said.

But that just represents a small percentage of foreign students. Many international students come to the UK to gain a better quality of education and better prospects in life.

It would b to the detriment of this country to limit or stop foreign nationals from studying science related degrees. I think they should first of all look at the state of the science and engineering in this country before thay make any hasty decisions.

About reference letters
C

I don't really know if there is a time frame but i needed references for mine and in about a week + few days i got them.

I think it depends on how busy they are but i'm sure it'll be done before the deadline.

age is an issue

All the very best blue. That's great!

What benefit Masters with Distinction?
C

What?

You're not making much sense to me. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. If i could get a distinction in anything, i would go ahead and go for it. Do not settle for less than you can achieve but still create the time to be with with your family, nothing matters more.

Best wishes.

viva tomorrow - any advice please
C

All the very best. Just be yourself and try to feel relaxed (i know that's hard to grasp at the moment) but it helps a lot.

And remeber, you are the expert on your subject.

University bullying: to stay/go?
C

Weigh both reasons; Why does your current department not want to leave?
-Is it a sound reason or are they just hating on the other uni?

And why does your proospective university want you?

In the end it will all come down to you making the decision based on what you love most about the two and which one would profit your more.
