Thank you all for your comments and help. Tomorrow, I'm having a meeting with the visiting prof. who was with my supervisor the day i was offered the position. He doesn't like what's going on and wants to sort it out. So, there might be some positive news tomorrow.

Well, i'm in Engineering and we always use the third person in reports. It might be different in other fields, so i think you're in order

I know :), I would stick to using the third person. In that instance, not using 'I' but maybe stating that 'in your own opinion or view'

I've just done a littel research and i think it should be written in the third person. For example:

Use reporting verbs and phrases (eg; The author describes…, Smith argues that …).

Well, its a tricky choice (at least in my own view). You already have access to some good experience in your field. By the way, how long ago did you start the training programme at work?

In any case, if a Phd is something you have always wanted or you think would boost your career prospects in your field then go for it. Otherwise, i'd stick to the job and gain some experience and maybe a Phd much later on.

I do not want to be pessimistic but believe that this is just a little glitch or go as far as going to the SU (even if i do appreciate the adive and tempted to do so). My supervisor has been nagged by one of the administrators whom i work closely with and he has said he's going to write a proposal by tonight.
This, at least, would help me apply for some funding if nothing else.

Hi Aliby. The only contract i got was for the administrative duties in the uni that came as part of the 'scholarship'. What i don't understand is how they can tell me that there was, get me on board, and then tell me that there isn't at the last minute.

You know, i had to turn down a project manager of a company who wanted me to do a project with him (but in scotland and i'm in london) because the uni had already contacted another company to do a project there.

I'm looking at what options i have. I'm thinking if its worth contacting the manger again and letting him know where i stand at the moment.

Yeah, 6kitten is right. It's a lot easier to go from a degree to a PhD in the sciences/Engineering but for social sciences, it might be a lot harder.

I also finished a degree and will be commencing a PhD soon (should've been this month if not for my supervisor's incompetence!) Well, the month's not over yet, so I’ll have to see.

If your supervisor thinks you're able, then go for it. They have obviously evaluated your skills and trust them enough to handle a PhD.

Thanks guys. He was supposed to have drafted a proposal long ago so that i could apply for more funding for the subsequent years ('cos that's what my job in the uni entails) but he didn't. I think confronting him tactfully would be the appropriate thing. At least he has to let me know when funding will be available.

Hi guys! I'm stumped. I can't believe this is happening. I was just informed by the research administrator in my department that my supervisor can't enrol me for the February start because he said there isn't any funding.
I was giving a scholarship to do my PhD and was assured that there was funding for at least the 1st year and finding one for subsequent yrs won't be a problem. I agreed to this and quit my job (not related to engineering) and started an administrative role in the university, only to be told about this at the last minute.
The thing is, my supervisor saw me this morning, greeted me and smiled and didn't even mention it to me! When it was his fault all along. I had to hear it from the research administrator.

Now, I’m basically back to square 1 after my high hopes of starting this month.

Any thought as to how to go about this, guys?

I don't think that'll cause any probelems. Besides the practical experience will do you good.
