Well, the decision all comes down to you. Normally you would do a course that you love and would enjoy doing. LSE and UCL and both great Unis. If finances is your main concern, then UCL would be a better choice but if you do not mind getting a loan then LSE would be the one. Personally, i do not fancy a bank loan. And if both courses appealed to me, then i would go for the offer at UCL.

Mine is in Engineering, so it a masters isn't compulsory but i have to go the MPhil/PhD route instead.

Yeah, I finshed last year and will be starting mine next month. I doubt there'd be any problems with coming straight from a degree course.

I think it'll enhance your knowledge greatly. Sounds like your area requires a lot of lab work.

I'd love to know where i can go places and do stuff and not get stuck with my work all the time.

i00t2000 is right. i was worried about that myself but i spoke to one of the academics at my uni and he explained that it is the experience gained that counts and can be transferred to another field which relates to yours. You can, of course, change to a totally different field but i think that's headache for me.

I had second thoughts initially but i have to take into consideration that its about the only opportunity i'll have to undertake a practical project as my PhD.

My supervisors and I visited a company in Andover for a project to do my PhD in next month. They were happy for me to join them. I'm in London at the moment and it'll be quite a move from a busy city such as London to a quite area. I was just wandering if any of you guys are doing your PhDs over there.

Well, i think he's just being a little bit over concerned with the fact that he is not getting any younger :) which is understandable. But in this, he has failed to understand the implications of having a baby at this point, especially with you working with toxic chemicals in the lab. Sit he him down and speak to him about it, explain your current position and as to what damage could be done to your baby if you have it now. I'm sure he'll agree and come to a compromise.
