Student discounts etc!
D

It's quite possible, this would have been about five years ago and might just have been a one off discount at the uni. It was really cheap, only about 20 quid , if that. I made really good use of it!

My supervisor send me a friend request on FB!

Well don't accept it then. Problem solved.

Student discounts etc!

Quote From PamW:

You can't get National Trust membership

Can you not? When I was doing my masters, I went to a student fair at the Uni and got a discounted student rate (even more than the usual first year discount they sometimes give) for the National Trust.

What master to do? (Computing Degree)

Hi Sag,

Sounds like you do have some ideas which you can build on which is good!

Firstly, whoever said bioinformatics career path is limited needs to stop talking out of their back passage. It's a skill highly in demand and will continue to be as pharma and research organisations look to cut down on expensive lab time and shift it to computational models. The downside is that indeed it is highly programming based (it's one reason I didn't go into the area despite having a PhD related to bioinformatics) and I believe they do use Python quite a bit!

Like I said in my other post, why not have a look at some unis and see what modules they offer as part of their masters? If you hadn't had much exposure then a generalist course might be best instead of trying to find something specific, where you can try out a variety of modules. Don't forget that you can then really develop one area as your thesis, so if you find an area you really enjoy you can focus. Don't necessarily have to focus straight away!

Librarians

They rank second in self-importance only to receptionists at doctors surgeries. (ALthough not at the one I use, they're actually really nice, I think I stepped into the wrong place last time I went!)

Librarians

Clairette, I got a very stern telling off from a friend of a friend who was a librarian when I once referred to the library assistants as librarians! :$ I've never forgotten it to this day...

But I sympathise. They always seem to have a superiority complex, no matter which library I have been to, uni or public ones. I think it's still that old view of the librarian, a humourless middle aged lady looking over the top of her spectacles telling people to shush!

A lot of the university libraries here in the UK (well a lot I've seen, included all the unis I've studied at) are automatic - you can take books out at a machine, and return them at a machine. No need for aggressive library assistants that way (and I say library assistants delibrately - a librarian is a professional career).

Finding it tough

I agree - take the lead and just get on with what you think is best. Your supervisor doesn't always know best!

How did I miss Colombian girls! At least they're getting a bit more exotic than crappy trainers and how wonderful LSBF is. Give them a little credit. But only a little (up)

Hey Ev. I put on loads of weight during my PhD (though that was more down to depression and rubbish partner and generally crappiness of life than the PhD itself). I've lost a few stone of it and still losing more, so I'm with you if you need any support!

Even if I am drooling at the leaflet that came through my door for two for one Tuesday from Dominos grrrrr

I need some PhD style critical thinking to find...
D

The charging cradle for my camera. I am all out of solutions so you lot, intellectual and critical as you all are, should be able to help me find it.

My camera has a rechargable battery that recharges in a cradle. It's not small but not huge either. I came to charge it a few weeks ago (for graduation no less!) and haven't been able to find it anywhere. It's at one of two possible locations - either it's here (where I live and work) or at my parents'.

I've ransacked through everywhere here it could possibly be and can't find it anywhere. My parents have been decorating recently and we've moved a lot of stuff around. But as we've been unpacking all the boxes again, still nowhere to be found.

So.... where could it be? All sensible, plausible, ridiculous and impossible suggestions considered. (gift) for the silliest answers (snowman)

How do you know if you're in love?
D

I'll agree with Algaequeen (is there anything I disagree with her on?!) it's easy to get caught up in the initial rush when things are all nice and sweet. Enjoy it by all means, but I think love is something borne out of really getting to know each other on a slightly longer term basis. Well, that's my opinion at least. But just enjoy it :)
