My masters stipluted 2.i entry requirements and theres a few 2.ii's and at least one guy with a 3rd, so your options may be less limited than at first glance

Entry on to an economics masters is unusual with a 2:2 so with a third I cant see it being realistic to be honest. A big problem is that masters in economics are by and large only offered by "good" universities. You could try a more vocational course in a related subject which may have an economics component like finance for example. That way if you do really well you may be able to gain entry onto an Economics masters.
Also, have a look at Manchester uni's postgraduate diploma, this will give you entry onto the masters if you get a mark over 50 (i think). Another year tho, not perfect but beggars and choosers!

Its not crap, it makes sense, its short term relatively well paid work to make ends meet. You cant just say im waiting for a lecturing job when youve got bills to pay. Youve got to keep all options open.

Did you get a lot of advice from your tutors about your phd proposal? Did you get nominated for funding? Im interested in a Phd but not sure I want to do it at my current uni, but I think the competition would be stiffer if I try to get funding for the uni i want. Does it work like this? I mean- is the application judged purely on the proposal regardless of the uni?

know how you feel, I recently got 72 in a presentation which i was over the moon with. The next week 2 coursemates done their work in a day and got a better mark than me (id spent about a fortnight on mine).
1st semester I had 2 maths exams and got 48% and 45% for them- bottom in the class, I almost cried. I made it up by getting top mark in final exam and ending the module with an 80% average.
Dont worry mate, if you keep workin hard it pays off.
