I grew up on a council estate in a shithole overlooking the mersey. We had no youth clubs (knocked down and made into apartments), there was no football pitches for miles, the park was full of needles and bigger, dangerous boys, and drugs were cheap and very easily available. So its easy to see were the problem lies. I certainly dont want to bring kids up here. Although I think i turned out OK, in this country we make it very easy for kids to go the wrong way. ill put the violin away now

I was thought of as a gifted child by my family because my dad taught me my timestables and i had a strange fascination with dinosaurs, and this amazing display of genius was confirmed by passing the elevan plus and being the only kid on the estate without any offences and/or a heroine problem. Sadly reality hit home as pubity took hold of me and education looked dull. But, if at first you fail- reassess success and settle for a comfortable mediocre existance

If you want to do it and can afford it, theres worse ways you could be spending your time eg in a job thats not taking you anywhere/making you unhappy/badly paid, in jail (dont ask), on the dole.

I know what you mean. Student life is so different as a postgrad, because you actually have to study. I think my problem is just a lack of contact with my "types". Theres less students our age and less on your wavelength etc. The main problem though is that you cant go and get pissed 4 nights a week anymore. Summers here soon, that always helps.

On my way to a distinction now, (its been 6months since last post) and Im considering further study next year, maybe phd maybe another masters. I think Ill be limited to applying for courses in Liverpool though which is a bit shit cos im sick of the place but it would cost me too much to move elsewhere, i think.
Ive got a bad credit rating and the bank wont lend me anymore money.
Any tips for looking for funds?

since postin this ive been talkin to the faculty staff in my uni. Theyve told me that its not the first degree that counts but the masters, and in particular the dissertation. If you can prove yourself to be a good researcher and your Phd proposal is good (and interesting to them) then you have every chance. Ive decided to do some serious brown nosing from now until the end of the course, i think that might be the deciding factor. I think getting substantial funding may be out of the question, but fee waivers are given out much more frequently.

Thanks for all your comments. I suppose Ive just got to try to get the best grade possible and apply to as many funding bodies as possible.
But at least i now know there may be opportunities out there.

Where should i look?

No i dont have work experience. I think i will be predicted a distinction by christmas though. Where should i look/apply other than ERSC? I could probably fund an MPhil myself, maybe i could apply for funding after that?

Im currently doing a masters in finance. I would like to do a phd in Finance/Economics. Is gaining funding out of the question for such grades? What if i got a distinction for the masters?
Where should i start to look?
