viva question
D

I can't really answer that but wouldn't think it would constitute a major (huge) correction. Have you kept the work you did? Give it some thought now as to why you didn't include it so you can answer, in the slight possibility you might be asked. However, unless you've left something very obviously out they'll probably concentrate on what is in your thesis.

The One Goal Thread

Button, I averaged about 500 words a day during write up (I'm very considered in what I write but can't write at speed) and the words mounted up. It's quality over quantity and so don't be too hard on yourself. I also worked to a plan, a plan with flexibility in it but a plan. You'll get there!

AAagh this is something I didn't even think much about.

I'm in a bit of a predicament. Got a post doc job, all fine til HR found out I don't actually have a PhD yet and bumped my down to RA salary. They say I NEED to have PhD within 3 months of the post starting. This will be 4th April and unless I get the minorest of minor corrections I can't see that happening, especially if internals sit on the corrections for weeks.

Surely the mistake is on their part as they didn't read your application properly or the panel didn't clarify at interview. In the worst case scenario, after your viva (all the best with that) explain to the internal what has happened and hopefully they should do all they can to speed the corrections process up. I'd like to believe if you do a good job they'll overlook a bit of red tape which would be responsible for delaying things. Try not to worry.

Many thanks Dunni73. I just want to see the back of it because I don't feel I can move on until I get the green light. Would you mind if I PM you with a question?

After viva and doing minor corrections, how long was it before you received word everything is OK from the examiner?

I've constantly been double posting on the forum recently and can't understand why - sorry!

see, I've put a little page marker for each chapter - as I've heard otherwise you can fumble and get panicked if trying to find a chapter section. But I can't think of the life of me what I'd put on post it notes

Yes, getting panicked in trying to find things in my thesis was a big, big problem for me in viva and you do feel the pressure at these points because you are aware the examiners are waiting. Best advice I can give is try not to panic and remember to go to your contents page or pages first before fumbling through your thesis. I didn't bring post it notes and while I think it could be helpful to have stuff documented on them it wouldn't have helped me due to the type of questions I was asked.

Have you always been a good student?

...have always been a poor student in terms of attendance, but it has never really degraded my performance (probably increased it... I never did learn anything in class or in lectures, only ever in my time of private study!).

So I suppose in that sense I was always a good researcher because almost everything I've learned throughout my education has been self-taught and self-discovered, with very little reliance on teaching and lecturing (which is a good thing too because many of the lecturers at University were awful!).

The above describes me as well. My attendance at lectures was worse than bad and I'm far better at self-directed study. I think very few people make good lecturers, just my opinion though.

Good on you! The way to see it is if you had more time you would just waste it. Working to deadlines will keep you alert and focused and you're so very nearly there. Keep going...

Why do you most want to be a Dr?

The difficulty with academia is finding a way in and if you're out in the wilderness for too long or fail to establish a name for yourself you risk becoming Dr Who...
