Why did you do your PhD?
D

I can tolerate most research if I'm allowed to do it on my own terms (work where and when I want).

I love research when I'm allowed to study my own research interests.

I love working from home and dread ever having to go back to 9 to 5 but hate the thought of short term research contracts and moving around every year or so. :-(

I picked "Mainly because it was funded and I was unemployed". I had hoped it would see me through the recession but three years on it doesn't look like it!

Following on from other threads, I think it would be interesting to know why people are doing or did a PhD. Please answer by picking the response you most agree with and expand with comments, if you wish.

Ladies: What length hair did you have when doing your PhD?
D

You're not meant to wash your hair at all. If you leave it long enough (no pun intended!) it will eventually start to clean itself.

A friend of a friend had really long hair and only washed it once a week and according to my friend this person had the best head of hair ever!

You're learning a good skill in defending your position as you'll need that for your viva! A lot of people doing a PhD find it very stressful and probably feel like pulling their hair out at times and so you may not even need to get it cut...

The long and short of it is that it's really a personal decision as to how you wear your hair! Would this not be better in off topic?

The Happy Thread

I'm happy because I've been upgraded to 3 stars! (up) I've done no work today but will make up for it tomorrow. Tuesday's is my R & R day. I tend to be most productive on a Saturday and Sunday

That's fantastic, Sneaks. Have you considered giving notice of intention to submit? Although you may or may not have some way to go it will help keep you focused and give you that extra push.

From what I can see address really is fine but if you want to let me see the sentences just before and after I'll let you know (gives it a bit more context). Send me a PM if you like.

Just sounds as though you need more confidence in your writing ability. Also try not to think too hard about the words you're using when writing as it may hinder you. It's best to write and return to it later, in my opinion.

If you're talking about the limitations of other research I think putting 'therefore this study addresses these limitations' is fine. Remedy would be much worse.

Should I forget about this fellowship application?
