The word count really depends on what your department and / or university recommend. You should be able to access some guidelines from your department, I would think.

PhD at age 52

Best of luck with your studies. I voted 'other'. Why? Wear what YOU WANT to wear and feel comfortable with wearing and you'll wear it with confidence. Age shouldn't really be a consideration(up)

Unemployed postdoc

At least one person posted with the same problem recently and a lot more suspect that this may be their future. I know it doesn't help and these are only words but you're not alone. Try to keep your chin up and keep looking...

'it is a truth universally acknowledged..."

LOVE it! I'm glad I'd finished my coffee just before reading that. You made me laugh, so if nothing else consider that as achieving your goal for today:p

Sneaks, all power to you and what you're doing is what research really should be about - investigating and exploring new ways etc.

However, i'll be completely honest, at this early stage I think it's all about playing the game and giving examiners what they want / expect. I'm not going to do anything that challenges me too much. That said, as long as you know what you are doing, it is correct and you can explain yourself clearly you'll be OK, I should think.(up)

National Insurance contributions?

I think you're incredibly gutsy having to take the news about your illness and then having to endure all that! I'm glad you fought on and hopefully this has helped others. I'm actually horrified at how you were treated.

BilboBaggins,

Talk about getting kicked when you're down! I'm sorry you had to go through that...

National Insurance contributions?

I do know it can have an impact on state pension. Basically, you have to work or pay N.I contributions for so many years (do check but I think in the region of 30+ years) in order to get a state pension.

Its time

Let us know how you're getting on Sneaks. I hope you're getting through it all without too much stress.

Keep going!!!(up)

PhD versus clinical science job??
D

I know nothing of your area and it's really a personal decision but I'd take a good job over a PhD, especially in this climate. Of course you could always do a part-time PhD alongside a job but I'd imagine it would be very tough going.

Yipee! 10 out of 10!

Some good news

I'm sure you're relieved - well done!

PhD to research assistant instead of Post-Doc?
D

The thing that strikes me is you seem very resilient and very resourceful which are both sought after qualities. Anyway, you'll only ever know if a research group would be interested in someone such as yourself by making applications. Do what you feel is right for you and do what makes you happy!

PhD to research assistant instead of Post-Doc?

You've a refreshing attitude! However, although I would suggest you apply for the posts that most interest you and which you would feel comfortable with doing, reading your post it seems as though you haven't been through the Viva and so if you pass it what's to stop you applying for post-docs? It's all learning...

Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!

I've no idea how I'm getting on. I've had no feedback relating to my chapters! Seriously...

I'm going to wish you all the very best as I've decided not to look at this thread anymore as it just makes me nervous...

Good luck everyone
