How much detail is needed in describing your analytical framework?
E

...I would first go back to the origin of your methodology - what theoretical perspective is it based on/informed by? (for my methodology, its symbolic interactionism and ethnomethodological thought). From there you can get an idea of what other methodologies were also inspired by these theoretical roots, but have a different take on certain aspects (such as different transcription conventions, ways to apply the methodology). Methodologies that are more different than that are often from different theoretical schools of thought, and will need some exploration too.

How much detail is needed in describing your analytical framework?

Hi Zelda,

I'm using CA and I was told the same thing - to 'locate' the methodology within a bigger framework. At first I thought there was no point in doing this (I wanted to get to the 'real' business of writing the PhD, was sure of my method, and equally sure there was nothing really to write on the other ones) but, in doing it, I realised that the excersise was so valuable to the research, the analysis, and eventually paved the framework for the analytical perspective of the PhD. Yikes. I totally did not expect that (and yet again my supervisor was right... grrr...) . So back to the question ...

What's the Process for upgrading to your PhD when you're 1+3
E

Oops forgot about the funding bit... like cc my funding wasn't interrupted, the ESRC just required evidence of re-registration with the university, which I faxed to them, although perhaps your uni (like mine does nowadays) deals with ESRC admin internally, which will be loads quicker and easier (hopefully ). I'd definately get on to the department/graduate administrator for the info, they'll know for sure what's what with this.

What's the Process for upgrading to your PhD when you're 1+3

Hi Bobby,

I'm a fellow 1+3er and at my uni we just carried on into the PhD, no transfer report or mini viva or stuff like that. I do remember having to register again at the university at the beginning of the academic year as the PhD is a different degree from the masters, but apart from that it was a bit of an anti-climax with no formal start as such!

names, marriage and phd?
E

Hi everyone, well after reading this thread I got worried as a potential Dr Maiden name wanting to be a Dr married name sometime in the next few years! So I 'phoned the registry of births marriages and deaths in London and they have assured me that you can choose whatever surname you want (maiden, partner's or double-barrelled so something completely different if you fancy it!) and the title stays with you whatever you do to your name or surname; no-one can remove your title once earned (unless on your own insistence!). It's easiest if you're going to change it, to change it to your partner's or double-barrelled as the marriage certificate shows 'good reason' for wanting the change.

Help I've been invited to do a talk
E

Hi JA - well done! It's a great thing to be invited to present, and it's really good news to hear you're going for it. I was seriously nervous before my 1st presentation with exactly the same worries you mention, but like the other forum users say... just go for it!
However, I would advise against apologising before you start you talk for your early-stage research or being 'only' anything for that matter! This was the first thing I was told when I was gearing up to present. Apparently this starts you on a downbeat note - if you don't mention your rookie status and present confidently, they'll be looking at your work as peers....and they won't notice minor slips etc. as they won't be looking for them (unless you advertise your 'only' status at the outset)! If you get questions you can't answer at the end its perfectly acceptable to say you don't know or its a work in progress.
Best of luck, It'll fly by and you'll feel so great afterwards!!

Reference letter bypassing supervisor
E

Hi MichaelA. If you are so sure you don't want to continue your PhD and you don't want an MPhil, then I don't see why you need to hide the fact you want to (and surely are going to) leave from your supervisor. As for giving reasons why you want to quit, it might help if you consider the reasons why you want to do a PhD in a particular subject at the other institution (and why you won't consider changing your supervisor or subject at your current institution). As it stands though, it appears that you want to be doing anything except what you are currently doing, which is not a good reason for beginning a new PhD. As for jobs, I agree with Sue.

Office space - what is it like in your dept?
E

At my uni there is a policy that every PhD student has space in an office in the department, which is great, but most offices are crammed to bursting (mine is shared between 12, but only has desk-space for 8, and we have to share 2 computers between us). Luckily not many people come in every day (three or so on a daily basis), and most have laptops anyway so luckily its really not that bad. I do worry what would happen if everyone decided to start coming in every day though!

Someone give me a slap please!

I guess now you can tell my own procrastinatory prowess - sign me up for that PhD!

Supervisor hall of fame - what's the worst thing yours has done/said?
E

You're lucky PinkNeuron! - I thought I had a great supervisor (I have two but the other was away for the first 18 months) - I was churning out work and he loved each chapter, only asking for minor revisions each time... but then the other sup. came back... and he asks for a major rehaul on all of the chapter drafts, putting me back months The comments did make sense though, and now I look at the suggestions and think 'why didn't I think of that?' so instead I'm mad at my first sup. who didn't suggest changes in the first place and just waved me on blindly even though there were (now obvious) problems with the work

MSc in IT Part Time
E

Hi Brij

"I just don't know how to go about finding out which uni's do evenings masters"

- I also spent just 5 minutes typing the information into google.com and following the leads to find several courses in London universities that have evening courses in IT and project management subjects. Even if this primary search doesn't give you the specific results you require, e.g. the right course or not evening courses etc., you can at least see which institutional websites to look at and then use their internal search engines, or, better still, phone their admissions dept. and ask them directly. I suggest you spend some time doing this for yourself, rather than ask the forum to do it for you... it will be good practice to hone your research skills.
