Hi Maria, I like Mariella, Marietta, (the names I would give to a little girl if I ever had one - perhaps in another life!), Pippy (the name of a friend's daughter - but also a name I've always loved, I called a kitten that once), Julianna, Rosa, Rose, and Tangina - I have a student by this name, so lovely! Oh, also Marissa is lovely.

Eleanor is fabulous, I think - so elegant, but not posey.

I think Lizzie always has something too.

One thing I would say about this is: Only tell them what you absolutely have to, so don't tell them you are finishing up, or that you have a viva; just say that your PhD studentship is over and that you are available for full-time work, which your are. In my experience, and from what I seen on this forum, the JSA people tend not to know their arse from their elbow and if you get a 'Pauline' (the league of gentlemen) type, then any fragment of an excuse could be used to disqualify you, or at least disrupt your claim, and they are nigh on impossible to dispute with in any rational way.

Good luck

Hi Folks I just saw Tom Ford's A Single Man, it was amazing! Very sensitive description of true love that must be hidden, and of secret, private grief. It made me think really hard about heterosexuality and the expectations we sometimes put on eachother - the relationship in the film just wasn't like that. I know not all hetero relationships have barriers of expectations, but I think there can be a default switch to this which is pretty common. A really beautiful film, in every way. Colin Firth is fabulous. Tom Ford is amazing!

Hi all, I did 2 tomatoes today, but they were very productive. I have finished items 1 and 2 on my list, so the first re-draft of my definitions section is completed. Lovin gthe tomato thing, I seem to be whizzing through and really concentrating - I seem to get loads more done in those 25 mins than I otherwise would. Thank you so much Sue, for introducing me to it. XX

Hi all, am quite pleased with meeself today. I did 7 tomatoes, one of which, admitedly was half taken up with a telephone call about pizza toppings - yes, I spent 13 minutes discussing pizza toppings and establishing appropriate wine quantities for a sleepover.

But I did the following: Read my definitions section and almost finished the frst re-draft of that, I'm pleased with it, although it will still need some developing. It's going to be core to the thesis, and quite controversial, so I'm developing my core concepts and making them as water tight as possible, as I go.

See you tomorrow and have a really good evening, especially those of you who are romancing tonight. X

does anyone else annoy the c*** out of themselves re-arranging random scentences?
Avatar for Eska

Hi all, this is possibly related to the geek thread. I often find myself, when reading, or watching news readers on TV, re-arranging people's sentences and grammar in order to test out wether or not the sentence is arranged in its most grammatical and eloquent way. Anyone experience this? Is ths normal?

Not procrastinating... honest!

Hi folks, am resurecting this thread after its short break.

Right, so, tomorrow I am going to do some re-drafting. I haven't written for the PhD for over 2 months now, although I spent last weekend reading William's book, '...Style and Grace...' in preparation for my return to the academic key board. I have a deadline - next Sunday night - by which time I need to get a whizzo re-draft of my thesis outline to my sup. Here are my goals for the coming week:

1. Read though my extended section which defines a particularly tricky and complex term, and explain my unique way of using it; then start re-drafting this section.
2. Complete re-draft of the above section.
3. Read though my thesis outline and plan its re-draft.
4. Re-draft the entire outline. Hopefully all of this list so far will be done by Thursday night.
5. Re-draft again on Friday.
6. Take a day off, go to folk festival, and let all this settle.
7. Final re-draft on Sunday.

Hopefully I will work steadly and speedily, and all this will go to plan. I have a sleep over pizza party on saturday night - which will probably wipe out sunday - and am teaching most of Monday, but due to it being reading week, a clear run aside from that. I have my fingers and toes crossed. See you in the morning, when I'll be trying the tomato thing.

Well Teek, it was elementary, as any of you psychology people will see. I was experiencing intense anxiety about the mysteriously mobile yukka leaf, flashbacks of its spontanious quivering wouldn't leave my mind, blocking any hope of progress with the PhD. After speaking to my personal, Freudian psychologist on the phone, I realised that it was, infact, the terror of MY coat quivering and wafting on a hanger in SOMEONE ELSES wardrobe that was plaguing me, I had been projecting my fears onto the innocent yukka leaf... So I bought the coat (it's a structured cape actually- 50% angora, the rest lambswool and cashmere, hmmmmmmm): Sorted, job done, and I have been applying for useful jobs and filling in expenses forms ever since. The PhD work will happen soon, very sooon...

Have a lovely, romantic evening out of your tracksuit!!

Oh dear Wal, how can anyone get a PhD completed with that kind of distraction going on! I had to solve the riddle of a moving yukka plant leaf this morning. Eventually, after a few phone calls, inspections and text messages, I connected it to my urgent need for a jaeger coat I spotted in the sale yesterday, which is now less than a quarter of its original price - I captured it online. With all that urgent business cleared up, I can finally press on with PhD work... after lunch that is, all this talk of tomatoes is making me hungry.
