FindAPhD is not generally filled up with ads for PhDs in counselling. It is unlikely that many funded places exist, however most universities with a psychology department would accept a student to do a PhD in this area if they could provide their own funding. Try searching our sister site FindAMasters.com for courses in counselling then look up the web sites of the departments offering these courses to see if they have any PhD opportunities on offer.

Things like this vary from university to university. Suffice to say that whatever the statutory requirements of you individual department a PhD is a lot of hard work. But you should still have time to go out (or stay in) and enjoy yourself.

A new lecturer would not have been appointed to a 5* department unless somebody thought they were pretty good. There can be a lot of advantages to being somebody's first PhD student. They will be very interested in what you are doing and will have far more time to dedicate to you and your project.

If your research involved some form of collaboration with a university then you may have a small chance of being admitted for a PhD by publication. However your thesis would be a public document and you would therefore need either control of the intellectual property rights relating to your research or permission from the people who do (presumably your former employers).


Do not be taken in by adds on the internet for 'Life Experience' PhDs - they are not worth the paper they are written on.

Most people in molecular biology will find getting a post-doc fairly straight forward (as long as they don't mind too much where they work). However competition for fellowships or lectureships is intense.

If you have already started your PhD then applying to the research councils is unlikely to work (the MRC does not accept applications direct from students anyway). If you are a qualified doctor then you could try contacting the BMA for advice (not for funds). They should be aware of specialist funding aimed at medics. You could also look on the AMRC (Association of Medical Research Charities) web site to find a charity which might help fund your research.
