paid work whiles under funding

Yes you are allowed to earn extra money, from things like demonstrating & teaching, although this should not exceed 6 hours per week (unless you are teaching in a school or technical college where you are allowed a full day). If your work is not related to your PhD then you need permission from the Research Council to do the work and you will need the backing of your supervisor.

Of course many PhD students have evening or weekend bar jobs or other casual labour. I would doubt that any of these people have applied for any official permission.

You should also remember that unless you earn over your personal tax allowance (about £4800) on top of your studentship, you will not be charged any tax.

Starting mid year

It is possible, but unusual. There's no fixed date for starting any PhD programme, but the money usually becomes available at the end of September and so that's when people start. You could try applying for places that start this October and asking for a deferred start date. This might lessen your chances of getting accepted though.

Life after PhD
Avatar for FindAPhD

Choice of PhD topic is important. Unfortunately you and most other PhD candidates are not in a position to judge whether the project is a suitable project for a PhD (i.e. will it get you enough results for a thesis). The factors you can take into account are the quality of the department (what is their RAE rating). The reputation of the supervisor is also important. Ask around and have a look at their publication record.

Early stage research

Like a number of new route PhD schemes, the Marie Curie Early Stage Training awards provide more taught elements than would usually be found in a UK PhD. @Early Stage Training' is just a name that the Marie Curie Fellowship Association have chosen to call their scholarships. The end result is still a PhD.

Sarah - See our Funding and PhDs Explained sections for links and information. Funding can be subject specific. If you want more information then please start a new thread. However the best people to ask are academics in your area of interest - this could be a current course tutor.

As an international student, unless you have your own funding, it is very difficult to do a Masters degree in the UK. Some universities do offer a limited number of scholarships.
