Where has she gone :-(

The reason for that is that they probably have very few common interests not because the professors think they are BETTER than the common chavs (actually they may think that if they are stuck up).

Oh and I just wanted to point out there is nothing wrong with having a corner shop. Infact they are GREAT.

My parents had nothing when they started off but growing up I was a spoilt brat and got the best of everything from public school education, to brand new cars and expensive holidays. Not bad going for parents without a qualification to their name....

This is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do agree that I'm not better than anyone else who has not had the same academic opportunities as I have BUT I also think they have no right to think badly of me just like I have no right to think badly of them for this reason (which is what I thought Zara was talking about).

However we ALL should agree that everyone is better than the chav scum who sit around on their ass all day long, watching tv, drinking, smoking, taking drugs and causing violence all paid for by the tax payers. I think I work hard (most of the time) but these factory workers work hard too. At least they are earning a living and not living off the state and we have to respect them for that, qualifications or no qualifications.

Silly Golfpro, we are not talking about being better than them, we are talking about why these people do not like Zara (take the mickey etc) because she is more educated.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Zara making the best of what opportunities she had whilst most of her school-mates did not and have ended up in dead-end jobs.

I don't understand this thread. Yes some people do have PhD's that are going well and have good stipends etc, at the moment I count myself in that position. However if I constantly said this then I would feel I was rubbing salt into the wounds of the people who are finding it not quite so plain sailing.

Instead of writing a thread about how you feel guilty for being in a good situation why not try to contribute to threads where people need help/suggestions/assurance or even in one of the threads that have nothing to do with anything!

Meetings with supervisors

I think it depends on the area itself as well as the supervisor but the earlier you are in your PhD, the more often you should meet your supervisor. I'm supposed to meet my main supervisor every two weeks and both academic supervisors once a month although at the moment I have quite a bit of work to get through before there is any point in having a meeting. So it also depends on where you are with your work.

i dont know how much more i can take of my supervisor

You could pay someone to rough her up a little?

I could do with a bit more dosh....maybe me and Mia (or should that be 'Mia and I') could do it together!

Are you a geek?
H

I retract my statement on saying that most people on here are not geeks. This is in reference to the "bad grammar" thread.

PhD Students - Why is their grammar so poor?

This thread is lame.

I'm with stu on this one.

Are you a geek?
H

hmmm, anyway going back to the original subject, I wouldn't call myself a geek. I know people outside the science world who don't know any real scientists expect them to have the stereotypical attitude and appearance. Yes I have come across scientists who do fit this stereotype but I honestly believe most people are relatively "normal", you wouldn't look at them and say "you are a boffin".

I know sometimes my friends call me geek/nerd when I say/do a certain thing but I think they mean it in a complimentary way. I think people expect me to look/dress like a geek because of what I do but to be honest I could probably pass off as a bimbo if I dressed up like one. Just because you are more intelligent than the average person and have a better knowledge of particular subjects, it doesn't make you a geek.
