Masters with a Designated degree?
H

If you can afford to fund a masters course then it could be a good idea to do one. Some of the better courses may reject you if you have mark lower than a 2.1. How much do you really want to do a masters though?

I think you could get a lab-based job but it might be only as a lab technician or equivalent. The market at the moment is rubbish and even the big pharma companies are kicking out good scientists.

Have you looked at findamasters.com for any courses that appeal to you?

I don't totally get the designated degree thing but I think you would probably need an honours degree to get into a good masters course. Does that mean you have a 2.2 or less? Have you applied for any jobs in your field?

Masters rejection, what next

I've actually taken the GAMSAT but luckily I didn't make the right grades for interview. I think my overall mark was over the cutoff (thanks to my brilliant mark on the science paper) but I was short of 5 marks for the essay paper. I'm glad now though!

Anyway! Are you sure you want to do medicine? It's not that great at the moment, have you spoken to some current medics?

The best thing would be is to try and do an Alevel in Chemistry, this is normally the compulsory science A-level when you apply through the normal route. You said you have done some shadowing, thats great, do more! I know it's hard to find people who are willing to let you. Try and do some hospital voluntary work a couple of times a week as well, if you get chatting to some medics, they will probably allow you to shadow them and will talk about their experiences.

Good luck!

Eragon is not bad. The second book Eldest was quite annoying really. I'm hoping the 3rd is better and I want to know what happens at the end!

As for reading fast, I read a lot, at least 3 books a week. I HAVE to read for at least half an hour before I go to bed because it relaxes me. I guess it's just from practice. When I'm reading the more literary-type books, I do take my time but for the normal paperback (like the ones in supermarkets) I just read quickly because there isn't anything technical to take in. I don't skim read unless it's a book I've read lots of times before and I just go to the most interesting bits.

If you like dragons, the third book in the Eragon series is out soon! I've just realised I leant my copy of Eragon to my friend last year and I still don't have it back! I hate it when people don't return my books or give them back and they look like they've been in a war. Especially as I hardly crease the spine!

3 hours??? It takes me that to read a normal 350page paperback!

I'm a huge reader of fiction, especially when I'm supposed to be working on the PhD. I liked Dorothy Koomson's latest book "Goodnight beautiful". It tackles surrogacy. I was crying my eyes out in the last few pages, very sad.

A non-fiction book I enjoyed recently was Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer who wrote about her time as the wife of a polygamist (9 other wives).
