Pursuing PhD while having a baby...advice needed

I asked my hubby if he would consider going part-time or even stay-at-home if we were to have a child. He has said "hmmmm...yes" but I'm not sure I would want him to...

I would have loved to have a baby earlier (or even now) but I know that I will lose my motivation for my PhD and career if I do. This is me though, everyone is different.

I see it this way, if you have a baby during your phd, you will end up having time off (quite a bit) and prolonging the agony that is a PhD. I have a few months to go (end of 3 years) and I can't wait to finish, it's driving me mad.

I'm not saying it can't be done because it obviously can. The question is, do you really want to do this to yourself and your partner? Are you strong enough as a couple? Why do you want to even do a PhD? Is it going to make that much difference to you as a working mum?

I'm not trying to put you off but doing a PhD is the hardest thing I have ever done. You have to motivate yourself and get up every morning knowing you will be doing the same thing again and again. I don't regret doing this, I have had sooo many opportunities to do many things I would never have even thought about if I hadn't started this. It has changed me as a person, some good things, a few bad things.

I once had a very expensive and very sexy dentist, I think he was German. He looked like the guy from ER, the tall, dark brooding one (no idea of his name). Having my tooth drilled by him was quite an experience......

I guess it also depends on you as a person and how you treat your phd. I met my husband during my first year and married him during my second year. He has been very supportive but it also helps that I hardly ever work at weekends and most evenings (treating the PhD as a 9-5 job). I think some people can only work in the evenings till late and that wouldn't necessarily go down well with a partner who works during the day and wants to spend time with them in the evening.

I wasn't expecting to meet anyone during the phd and definitely not marry them. So you never know what will happen. Just try not to dwell on it and it will happen if it happens.

lol, I meant more than 1000 calories, not 2000!

I love my food and hate to diet. Best thing is to stop eating junk/fatty food (check saturated fat) and exercise.

Now if I could only motivate myself.....

So what happens when you decide you have reached your weight goal and start eating normally again (i.e more than 2000 calories)? Especially if you do no exercise.

Is Nottingham University a good choice?
H

Ok, I apologise, it has ONE of the highest (4th or 5th).

Whereas Sheffield has one of the lowest.

If the OP isn't even relocating, then it doesn't matter I guess.

I forgot to ask, is it University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam?

One reason to not go for Nottingham (if you were stuck between Sheffield and Nottingham) is having the highest crime/gun rate in the country.

I don't want to work in academia, will a doctorate improve my job/career chances?
H

PC_Geek, it depends on the industry you are thinking about. I started a PhD with no intention of staying in academia (my supervisor knew this from the start - hence I got an Industrial CASE award). In the pharamaceutical industry, it is hard to progress up the ladder without a PhD (I'm not saying it cannot be done) but all the managers I ever came across had a PhD.
