Referencing in first year report
H

You should really reference anything that is not your own work and thoughts.

Make sure you check which format you need to do the referencing in (if you haven't already).

i hate it when people tell me what to do!

He also wanted something from her in return (blatently) which is the worst reason to do something for someone.

argh! is it possible to write 8,000 words in four days?
H

I can write a 1000 words an hour (at least) but thats only if it's me writing up my own work, having to use references takes much longer.

Having no distractions helps, turn off messengers, turn off the internet (if you don't need it). Try and give yourself small aims and rewards, "1000 words by x o'clock and I can have a kitkat with my coffee" etc but be realistic!

Hey! what do i do next

I feel a sense of de ja vu.....

What happened to the LittleMe/Piglet/O.stoll thread?

Oh no, what did I miss

sigh...time for haircut
H

My hair is neither straight nor wavy, I think I would prefer it to be wavy. I've had my hair straightened once by the hairdresser and I hated it (so did hubby). Whenever I go to an indian event I see all these clones (including my cousins) swishing their straight hair about and I think they look silly. I know I look like a tramp thought

Whats the obsession with straight hair....? (confused smiley)

Pregnancy vs PhD - advance preparation!
H

Wow rigel, that's one amazing story!

Good luck with the new baby and your PhD, you work so hard I feel ashamed with my much easier life and lovely supervisors!

PhD: is it affordable?
H

The university warden thing sounds like a good idea unless you plan on doing a lot of work at your residence (freshers make a LOT of noise). At least you wont have to pay for your accommodation, bills and you get paid to live somewhere!

Tutoring can pay quite a bit, I was getting around £25 an hour for A-level. Do that a couple of nights a week and you have your food money for the whole week (plus some more - go out for a drink).

how do you people find working from home?
H

I agree with SeaBird. The difficult bit for me is forcing myself to start. Once I have, I can keep going.

Obviously people have their own methods of working but I will keep writing away and only reread and edit once I have finished a large chunk (like the whole chapter - also useful for writing the conclusion).

Would you do it again?
H

I'm about to start my final year (3rd) and to be honest, I can't wait to finish but it does feel like the end is in sight!

Theres been ups and downs (plenty) but the amount of experience that I have gained (and still to be gained) is amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I don't plan on staying in academia, I want to get my teeth back into industry (which my supervisors know).

Or so she wishes.

how do you people find working from home?
H

I have a study at home but still prefer working at uni. I hardly get anything done at home.

MSc Molecular Medicine
H

I did my masters at Sheffield and have stayed on to do a PhD.

Tips are, make sure you are on top of your coursework, the most easiest courses (seemingly) end up having the most time consuming coursework. Not sure if you will have any groupwork but that takes the longest to do.

The Donut: Back gain with Baggage!
