Throwing in the towel- thoughts?

Good luck grumple! :)

Discuss your concerns with your supervisors too. If you want to get out, the earlier the better. No point wasting time and energy.

Throwing in the towel- thoughts?

It really isn't the end of the world if you don't complete the PhD. Apparently 50% of those who start don't. Personally I think a PhD is over rated and really only needed if you want to become a researcher or stay in academia.

I love my PhD but in hindsight, I don't think its healthy for your mental health or relationships, unless you are very disciplined. It also can be a financial strain.

Confused - is my study qualitative or mixed methods?
H

Thanks chickpea!

The cards were used to understand the choices and preference, and I have used them to report which method was most popular and which was least popular.

I have used applied thematic analysis which allows the use of quantification in the analysis. Does this mean it would still be a qualitative study?

Confused - is my study qualitative or mixed methods?
H

Hi,

In my qualitative interviews, for one of the questions, I provided a series of cards to participants, each contained a different way to do something, and asked the participant to choose the three he most preferred.

(Lets say, each card was a different mode of transport, and asked the participant to choose the three cards (modes) he most preferred, and I noted it down)

I am now writing up the methods section and wondering what do I call these cards? They are not vignettes but what are they?

And does the use of these cards mean my study is not a qualitative study but a mixed methods?

Thanks!

Difference between codes and themes?
H

Hi,

I have codes, some that I have combined to become main codes.

I now feel like the main codes are actually themes. Are they?

Let me give an example. Say I asked people why they ate chocolate everyday?

The reasons (main codes) were: pleasure, greed, hunger, elevated mood, and distraction.

Are these high level 'reasons' codes or themes?

Starting PhD after 4 years of job

If your research topic is well defined, the first thing I would do is enroll myself on a methodology course/module.

So if the methods suggested is ethnography for example, get yourself on qualitative research course.

Master the methods and then things will seem easier.

I feel like my research is too "simple"
H

Thanks Chickpea. I don't really know of any existing theories or models that could relate to my research. Its difficult because it is interdisciplinary.
