I feel like my research is too "simple"

Thanks everyone for the vote of confidence! :)

I think the problem is that though my research does fill a gap in knowledge, its not really based in theory, as in I am not building on an existing theory, it is very practical. Could this be a problem?

Starting PhD after 4 years of job

Quote From ricki29:
Hi All,

I have just started my PhD after working for 4 long years in a non-science field. I am bit anxious and apprehensive about the road I have chosen to walk on. I have been talking to some PhD students lately, who shared their positive and negative experiences that they've had since the start of their PhD journey.

I am worried and would like to know whats the best way to start a PhD, is it just reading as many research papers as we can and taking notes of it?

Also, whats the best time and an appropriate way to start writing a review paper? How should I go about it?

Really appreciate help.

What area is your PhD in? Did you write the proposal or your supervisor? Is there a well defined topic? Do you know about research methods?

I don't think there's anything simple about mixed methods research. I'm currently wading through all the philosophical and practical implications of mixed methods. It's hard theoretical work. Then once you've done that, you have to learn two sets of data analysis techniques. Nothing easy about that man!

Thanks! I know mixed methods is not simple, it has been a minefield, but I feel like the research content/topic is too simple.

Hi,

I am going through a phase of feeling like my research is too "simple" and examiners will look at it and think, is this really the content of a PhD.

My research methods are rigorous and well justified. I just feel the actual topic is very simple. I'm not sure what I should do. The area is very new, and the topic has not been explored before, so there will be a contribution to knowledge, but its just doesn't seem like a "difficult" topic.

The studies are 2 straight forward interview based studies and one questionnaire study, and sits between social science and psychology.

Did anyone else feel like this? What should I do?

When did you format your thesis?

Thanks everyone! Did you all use Times new roman?

When did you format your thesis?
H

Hi,

I'm writing up chapters as I am going along and wondering whether I should adjust the formatting from now to how it is required at submission, or leave it to the end?

I don't really like so much space in between my text and also worry that it will put supervisors off reading it because it will appear to be too long.

What would you recommend, format now or later?

What form of thematic analysis is this?
H

Thank you both!

Examiners said my corrections could be done in a week and I still haven't finished them! What to do?
H

Send corrections without an explanation, as other posters have said.

Don't highlight other errors, just correct them and don't mention it to them.

HE Teaching (PT) vs Admin job (FT) - more valuable?

Is there any way you could do both? So aprt time admin job and part time teaching? Maybe job share with someone in a similar situation?

Statistic test for non-probability sample?

Anna, I am also doing a sequential exploratory study. I'm really confused about the epistomolgy behind this approach. Are you able to help with this please?

Statistic test for non-probability sample?
H

Strictly speaking from a statistical perspective, inferential statistics are not done on non-probability samples, but everyone does them!

You can do inferential statistics, but you can't claim generalisability of the result.

So you must acknowledge that the result from the inferential statistics only stands for your sample of students.

do you have a link to it?

What form of thematic analysis is this?
H

Hi,

I'm really confused! I've been reading up different forms of thematic analysis, including applied thematic analysis, template analysis etc but I'm confused which one my form of analysis sits in. This is what I plan to do:

1. Structurally code the interviews based on the structure of the topic guide (which is well structured)
2. Then within each code start coding and coding themes that emerge.
3. Continue doing that across the interview data and refine themes and add to them
4. For some areas, the data will be approached deductively and will be answering a specific research question
5. One theme for example, will be based on counting the responses.
6. Form explanations once themes have emerged

What form of thematic analysis does the above look like? I am using both inductive and deductive analysis.
