My data go against the dogma and I've been challenged!
H

Who challenged you? And where?

I wouldn't personally unless the person challenging was a leading authority on the topic. Even then, I would rather publish it first and then send it to him/her.

What do your supervisors think?

Invited for a PhD interview today - but it's scheduled for tomorrow?
H

Ask them if they could either postpone it due to the very short notice or if you could have the interview through Skype (if you feel comfortable with that)

Really? That's a great shame, their two courses were fantastic. Helped me no end.

Was there anything else that helped by any chance?

Hi, I think it may be OK if you were at the stage where you had collected all your data, completed all your studies but still had 1 year of funding left (so that you can benefit from a paid maternity leave).

However, in all honesty I think it is far too risky when doing a PhD. You have no idea what type of baby you will have and there is absolutely no way you could work on your PhD whilst you have a toddler or even a baby around. Yes, you might get 1 or 2 hours here and there, but trust me, you will need normal childcare then.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I know someone who planned to take 6 months maternity leave but had to take another further year as the baby never slept! And there are increasingly plenty of babies out there like that.

If you do plan to do it though, look into childcare properly, find a nursery that you feel comfortable with and can envisage leaving a 6 month old in, and work out whether it will work financially too.

Best of luck :)

The best thing I did was go on the CASS courses on questionnaire design and survey implementation, run by a super lady from the USA - Pam somebody.

Thanks! CASS have stopped doing courses now, but I'll have a look around.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend any books on designing or analysing a survey?

Thanks

Anyone else working over the bank holiday week?

Same here! Though I'm hoping to have a few days off too :)

New Knowledge

New knowledge - this is related to the results. What do you expect some of your findings to be that will be NEW (no one else has found that before)

Theoretical Framework

Mention the flaws of it, and recreate the 'correct one' and use that?

Leaving PhD, what are the scholarship consequences? Do I have to pay it back?
H

Are you in the UK?

Who pays your scholarship? Research Council or university?

My guess is you wouldn't have to pay it back.

Presenting findings of a study at a conference that you plan to publish as a Journal paper?
H

Hi,

I have written up results of a study that I hope to write up as a journal paper in the next few months.

Meanwhile a conference has come up, where I can present my work and need to submit an abstract before hand. Would it be OK to submit abstract to that conference and write a journal paper later on, on the same study?

Please place that into surveymonkey! You will get many more people responding!

I think you would be fine changing the mode, especially as it is lead by the results of your findings (that participants prefer a certain way of participating, which in itself is a finding!).

You wouldn't need to change the protocol, it'd be a mixed methods procedure, so using more than one method to get the findings you need. As it is qualitative it is very easy to combine,
