Word count for Book Review
H

Hi folks,

What's the general word count for book reviews in journals? I haven't been given a number. Also, do you have any model reviews you can share that have a good structure, that could be emulated?

Thanks! :-)

Gifts for supervisors
H

Hi all,

Haven't been here for a while - it is nice to be back :)

I was wondering what you'd suggest as gifts for supervisors. My friends and I are in a bit of a pickle, as we are encountering differing scenarios, and wondering what is and is not appropriate:

1. What would you buy a supervisor as a christmas gift?
2. What would you buy a supervisor that is going on a study leave?
3. What would you buy a supervisor that is going on maternity leave?
4. What would you buy a supervisor when you've passed your viva?
5. What would you buy a supervisor as a thank you present after a difficult paper is written or a study is completed?

Thanks for your help! :)

Dropping a supervisor
H

Hi,

What are the options when it comes to a dropping a supervisor?

I have a main supervisor who has supervised for me for the past year. I recently got two additional supervisors first one because my supervisor has to supervise with a senior, & the second supervisor was I think more for strategic reasons (he didn't have any PhD students and supervisor wanted to work with him on other projects). I have now found someone within the university who could probably add real value to my work, and I'm thinking whether I should ask first supervisor if the third could be dropped in place of this new found out professor?

1st supervisor put forward these two options - and I just went along with it. I haven't actually even had a sup meeting with third supervisor so I can't really see much of a loss and don't really see him adding much value to my work.

Is this rather rude or is this something that is done? I don't want to upset people ... What is the best approach to take?

Definitely Cambridge.

Do an MA at Cambridge, and if you want to then do a PhD you can do it at Cambridge, or at any other top uni in the world (much better than Central Lancashire). At that stage, you could probably get good funding too.

If you were comparing doing an MA at Cambridge to doing a PhD at say UCL, that would be a different question, as UCL is within the top 15 universities in the UK. But Central Lancashire uni may not even be in the top 100 in the UK (you would need to check).

A MA and a PhD are completely different.

Is it a good idea to take time off, ever?

Can't you finish first and then do the three month work?

Anyone in London? Can't believe the news at the moment

Glad (in a way) its not just me. Haven't managed to do any work since yesterday. I can't believe the chaos and violence - it is unbelievable.

What should I do besides working on my PhD?
H

Hi all,

I'm working on my PhD, but I'm wondering what I should do on the side to improve my job/research prospects once I complete. I want to gain transferable skills that will help me whether I decide to stay in academia or leave.

Any advice as to what practical things I could do?

Thanks!

Papers/Posters with supervisor?
H

Quote From Buzzy:

On come on guys, if the sups didn't add anything... why on earth add as co-authors? Simply credit them in footnote for 'coments on earlier drafts of this paper'. No input no authorship is the only way it makes sense..give yourselves credit where credit is due.

Seems like everyone has got differing views. Maybe each discipline/uni/country has its own cultural norms with regards to this?
