Papers/Posters with supervisor?

Interesting responses from both of you :) . I think I'll stick to the safer side and include him, it is easier that way.

Papers/Posters with supervisor?
H

Quote From BilboBaggins:

Conventions vary by field/discipline. In mine (humanities) it is perfectly normal for PG students to single-author journal papers and conference presentations. During my part-time PhD I had 2 peer-reviewed journal papers published and gave 1 international conference presentation. I was sole author at all of them. My supervisor didn't do work for them. So why should they be listed?

But did your supervisor not check them? A final edit?

I do, unless my supervisor thinks its not something worth her while i.e. the conference isn't high profile enough :p

Is it worth asking him if he wants to be excluded? The conference isn't high profile but I don't want to seem rude. I added his name, and he didn't comment on it.

Does it make a difference whether the paper is just you or with your supervisor?

Hi,

When you are a PhD student, do you always have to include your supervisors name as a second author in conference papers/ journal articles / conference posters?

Thanks!

Got the job :)))

Congratulations! :)

Congratulations!

All the best with your interview and viva! :)

Btw how did you manage to get a viva organised so soon? I thought it takes a couple of months after submission?

Not sure where to start
H

1. Yes that is fine

2. Yes by all means send him an email. That's how most contact is made. mention your research interest and how you'd be interested in him supervising the project, attach your CV for his consideration too, and see what he says. He may already have funding or may be interested in getting you funding.

Good luck! :)

How long to wait for PhD interview results?
H

As Caro said it differs. For one they told me they would tell me by the end of the day, and they called me. For the other one, they said they'd let me know through email in a few weeks as they had other candidates to interview. And they did.

A good tip is to send them a thank you email after interview.

The One Goal Thread

Has anyone used the Harvard style adapted for Leeds Met in Mendeley. I think is the best Harvard style I like, but I was just wondering if anyone else has used to and whether they have encountered any problems?

How do you differentiate between introduction and literature review? Surely there must be some overlap?

I'm looking at a problem specific to the sample I use (for example - people who own pet ducks) and so my intro is stuff from national statistics about e.g. how many ducks people tend to own and about how much it costs to feed ducks - leading into why I'm looking at that sample and the specific problem to do with that sample (e.g. duck food has gone up in price). My lit review is then about the academic research been done on e.g. duck keeping. My method is then looking at how people have approached researching duck-owning.

(its not on ducks btw :p )

Lovely anology, that explained it very well. Many thanks!
