References that are not from academic sources
H

Quote From sneaks:

have you just started your lit review? if so then you'll probably find whole areas of research, maybe even in other disciplines that will be relevant - they may not be on the exact topic but you'll probably end up reviewing them, so I wouldn't worry.

I'd talk about the research from non-academic sources but just make you highlight why it may not be as rigourous etc. and methodological flaws.

I have done the main bulk of the literature review though haven't written it all up. I haven't really found the same area in other disciplines.

References that are not from academic sources
H

Hi all,

My research is in an area that is still very much in development, and most of the sources in my literature review are from reports from government departments and online news articles (some of them are my own sources/understanding). Is this a problem? Also how do I critically review the literature if a) there isn't much literature about it b) it is an area that is still in development?

As I have very few journal articles/conference papers I can reference to, is this likely to be a problem? Will examiners look down upon a literature review that has very few academic references?

Thanks

Chococake!

Extra funding
H

Hi,

Has anyone ever negotiated extra funding from the University? I am currently on the same rate studentship as everyone else, but mine comes out of a large EPSRC funded programme. I was wondering whether it would be wise to negotiate for a rise or funding for commuting costs or other specific items? Does anyone have any experience of doing that?

Thanks!

How often are PhD students paid?

Quote From sneaks:

I'm was funded by the ESRC in london - you get £2k extra for being in london.

There are some cities in the UK that are just as expensive to live in as London - they should get 2K extra too.

Research in IT : about SEO of a website

For what level?MSc or PhD?

You need to read all literature around SEO and look at what areas have not yet been explored, and explore them as part of your research.

Hi all! :)

I haven't used this thread in a long time, hope to join in again.

Just completed writing up the results of the pilot study. Comes to around 2500 words. Is that too short/long? It was a small study?

Software for Analysis

Quote From palafour:

Hi, I am well rehearsed in using NVivo 8 which you can use for content analysis. NVivo 9 now has an inbuilt process which I think allows you to link with SPSS so you can conduct quant analysis on qual data. If you can't get a licence perhaps use a simple Excel spreadsheet to record qual data numerically and then merge into SPSS so you can define variables / groups. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Will check it out :)
