Loneliness of the long-distance researcher
H

Quote From clairette:

It depends completely on your university, department etc of course, but for French there are quite a few affiliated organizations such as http://www.sfs.ac.uk/ that offer funding towards conference costs etc. There must be equivalents for your area of research?

I haven't found any that fund PhD students.

Smart Phones and PhDs!
H

I use an iPhone - it is fantastic for email, calendar, scheduling, Mendelely, Dropbox etc. I think a cheaper smart phone is certainly worth an investment.

The One Goal Thread

Hey, what happened to every one today? Am I the only one not having a day off? ;-)

I managed to finish two goals out of the three. I'm going to sit and finish the third goal now :)

need some help to get this paper
H

Do you know which database it is in? I've tried looking for it through Google Scholar but can't find it.

the use of 'I'?
H

I've never used 'I' in formal writing. I've always thought it was not the best approach to take. I would probably feel quite uncomfortable using 'I'.

Google Chrome vs Firefox
H

Quote From sneaks:

I like chrome - it kind of has the same feel as Mario games on the nintendo - all colourful and simply laid out.

However, I always have to have an IE page open too as my university push email won't work as well on chrome - it has this safe mode which is rubbish and doesn't 'ding' when I have a message come iin.

How do you get Chrome to open a PDF in the browser instead of downloading it?

Bibliographic software - help!

Quote From sneaks:

urgh I'm having a right nightmare with endnote and windows 7 and/or office 2010 - it just goes crazy and loads of error messages pop up :-(

Is there a way of exporting all my data to mendeley and it still understanding where I've cited etc without me having to put it all in again??

I have no idea, but they have quite a good support team, it is probably worthwhile getting in touch with them. Btw I am so glad I made the decision not to use Endnote, crashes are such a waste of time and scare me!

Quote From hazyjane:

I've just started using Mendeley as we don't have any ref management software on the uni network/in my department BUT turns out the citation functions don't support Office 2010 64 bit version which is what the computer they've given me runs! Hmmm

There are in the process of releasing it - however it may be possible to run it as a 32 bit version? Or you could ask the department to re-install office 2010 as a 32 bit version. That's what I have done on my laptop.

Are you sure it isn't compatible with windows 7? I have windows 7 and have endnote installed, though I don't use it (I prefer Mendeley).

Paper help again please
H

Sorry - I had a look for the last three, but to no success.

Contacting related research groups
H

Hi,

Before contacting realted research groups, to say find out the findings of a research they conducted, are you expected to ask your supervisor first? Also, what is the risk in telling others in the academic world about your research - could it ever be a risk? Is there any possibility that it may get passed on and others may copy your PhD question or focus on the same area as you? :-(

Thanks!

Google Chrome vs Firefox
H

Hi all,

Which browser do you use and which one do you think is better?

Ive currently got Firefox with Zotero as an extension, but it keeps crashing. I don't know if that is because of Zotero or Firefox has its own internal problems, hence I'm thinking of moving to Google Chrome, but I'm unsure ...

Well done chococake!

I just have one small section of my questionnaire left to do. It's stumped me for ages but I think I'm getting closer to a solution. Yay to me, finally making progress!

Thanks! Well done to you too :)

Relationship vs PhD (time management)
H

I think you can have both - but it needs good time management. Why don't you work from 9 till 5 just as he does, and then spend the rest of the time however you wish, whether that be with him, or going to the gym/badminton practice (in fact why don't you ask him to come along to that?) Also, why is filling forms taking so much time of your time (it shouldn't)? I don't think you should give up your personal life, it isn't healthy.

It might help if you explain to your partner the pressures you are under. Maybe you should agree with him to spend two weekday evenings and one day on the weekend together, so that you are spending time together equally across the week. Thats just a suggestion - the best thing to do is to sit with him and come to some type of comprimise - some schedule that works well for both of you. All the best :)
