Hi Hugh, I've used stats in my thesis, but I'm not quite sure what you mean about showing the variables in brackets - can you give me an example?

Sorry! Let me try ...

So say my number 4 question in section A of the questionnaire is marked on my questionnaire with a reference of [A4] and the responses are coded as 'A4' variable. I then use A4 variable for analysis. When I am reporting the results of the analysis of A4, obviously I describe it in words, but should I make reference to the variable A4 in brackets? Or not really?

Thanks Zutterfly, I am hoping mine will be sorted soon too.

Has anyone used quant analysis/statistics in their thesis? If so, has anyone showed the variables used in the analysis within the text in brackets? Or is there no need to keep that all in? (I suspect there's no need but I just wanted to double check)

Zutterfly, that sounds like a great plan, enjoy! :)

Nothing yet sadly. Still waiting. Have you sorted out your viva examiners? Any tips?

I finished the edits :o I have decided to print it at the uni tomorrow morning and go to the binding service to get it very cheaply bound (as my sup wants a hard copy that is secured together).

I already don't know what to do with myself haha

Well done!! Go the cinema, nice meal and then have a duvet day the next day :-D

You sound very well prepared! You will be fine :)

Remember to try and enjoy the process, and that examiners are not looking to trip you up. They just want you to argue your case, and present justification for your choices :)

or even just "section 4.2.4" Hugh is fine.

Great thank you! I'll go with that then :)

Hi again, I have a question, if you are making reference in Chapter 8 to a section in Chapter 2, is it ok to place "see section 2.4.2" or should you place "see Chapter 2; section 2.4.2"? (Chapter numbers are in the footer of the thesis next to page number so it is easy to navigate). I am trying to reduce word count!

Hi again, I have a question: if you are making reference to a section in another chapter, do you write "see Chapter X; section X.X" or is it ok just to write "see section X.X". I am trying to reduce word count!

Zutterfly, woohoo! Well done! If you are anything like me, you'll miss it for the first 2 days, & then taste the true flavours of freedom, & then will never want to see it again ;-)

Mine is also off to proofreader in 2 weeks. Are you aiming for a Dec submission?

Teegs90, oh my goodness I can so totally relate to that - that's exactly how I've been feeling reading through mine today. I think it's because I have read it so many times that there is no novelty factor to it, and it just feels so simple to me. But I guess if someone was reading it for the first time, it wouldn't read like that, or I hope it wouldn't. I'm working on editing this week. Can't wait to move on from thesis :)

Okay, this week is crunch time at the end of a year that has felt like crunch time! Basically, I have three days off work to finalise everything to send off to the proofreader. If need be, I have next weekend too but I think I should probably be okay. Things seem to be taking a lot less time at the moment because I don't really have an option to procrastinate, and knowing that in just a few days my thesis could be basically finished is incredibly motivating!

Hope everyone else has a productive week too.

All the best teegs! :-) You're almost there, well done!

Quote From Miss29:
Hi guys

Glad you are all progressing really well. Wish you all the best,

I want to ask you about conferences/publications. Do you wait for your supervisor's approval of a conference abstract/paper or you send it off especially if the deadlines are approaching and supervisor never get back to you?

Chase them up one more time saying if I don't hear back from you saying otherwise by 5pm today, I will submit the conference paper. And then go ahead and submit.

Career in diplomatic services or PhD in History at Cambridge?

Who's to say returning to the civil service wouldn't be an option later though?

It may be an option of course, but after 4 years of being out of civil service, you'll be 4 years behind in terms of career ladder.

I know its a cambridge offer, but I still wouldn't take the PhD offer. A civil service job is much better. My friend who did same degree as me at the same time, works in civil service and earns 4 times more than me.
