Can you clarify 'the section before chapter 1' Hugh? The thesis' I have seen completed in my department tend to go: Acknowledgements, abstract, contents then it launches into chapter 1 which is the introduction.

As you described, that's the section I am talking about. I wonder if there was one name for it? (Like a Preface or something). Maybe there isn't a name ... I have left it blank for now, because atm I have got that section numbered with roman numerals and chapter 1 (the intro) starts with page 1.

Well done to you both litphdgirl and Zutterfly - you are both making excellent progress!

I am formatting today, and it takes much longer than I had anticipated.

I am placing Chapter 1 | Page number at the bottom of each page (this helped: http://phdtalk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/inserting-chapter-title-to-header-in.html)

Does anyone know what you would call the section before Chapter 1 starts?

Finished thesis published online

I would take the option not to publish it online, until you've published from it. Its just the safer option. You don't want to have to re-write journal papers when you can pick text up straight from your chapter/s.

Have you looked into EngDs?

Oh my goodness Hugh I had no idea it was that soon! I made a timetable that corresponds with an October draft but I am hoping to get it in sometime in September- I need to take a leaf out of your book it seems!

My urgency is because I'm expecting some major changes after 1st draft, so I need time to make those! I'm also hoping if I get any of the jobs I've applied for, the thesis won't be a hindrance. Well I hope it won't be.

Finally starting to be productive again. A little behind my planned schedule but on course for a full draft of the thesis by the end of the month. Have a big weekend of work ahead but feeling good about what I'm writing and editing. Will update again soon - more for my own accountability than anything! :)

Well done! :-)

I've also got full draft due in 3 weeks time, I really need to make a move on.

Hi,

I was wondering if there are any OU lecturers or PhD students here?

Proof reading is the worst! Good luck with it all, at least you can take that outside with you and enjoy the sunshine! Well, if you're terrible like me and print it out haha. I just don't spot typos on the screen so sort of had to. Double sided and four pages on each sheet though to minimise the damage!

I'm just waiting for my viva date now. It'll be a month on Monday since I submitted and nothing, I wonder if this is normal...

Thanks! :) definitely printing everything off. I'm working through chapter by chapter.

Maybe you should chase it up? We have a rule that viva has to be within 3 months from submission.

What are you doing in this interim period btw?

Hugh, are you using a particular style guide? I am using APA style and have been advised to be really careful with things like '&', as my supervisor has seen people picked up on that in viva! It seems terribly nit-picky to me, but apparently there are some style guide freaks who will look specifically at these tiny details!

I'm not using a particular style guide, no. If each heading doesn't fit on one line, its just not as easy to follow. Maybe I'll ask my supervisors

A question: do you think its OK to use '&' instead of 'and' in headings? Some of my headings in the contents page are going on double lines and its harder to follow.

How is everyone this week? What are your plans?

I'm editing this week. I'm trying to take it chapter by chapter, but editing and proofreading is my pet peeve. I'm hoping I'll get a chance to enjoy the lovely weather too :)

How are you doing this week? Have you recovered well from your op?

Thesis font dilemma - help please!
H

Quote From IntoTheSpiral:
If you go to Tools->Fonts and then select the Advanced tab there are some Advanced Options. To change the number baselines select Lining from the Number Forms option. It doesn't work for all fonts, e.g. Georgia, unfortunately. But does work for Constantia. After uhming and ahing I've gone back to Georgia actually. The stats are more readable, even if the numbers aren't all with the same baseline.

I'm using Word for Mac, but expect it would be in a similar place on Windows.

Thanks, I'll try this! I'm actually keeping all my diagrams, tables and headings in Calibri. I hope that'll be ok?

Also, are you going with 12pt or 11pt with Georgia?
