Bullies at the lab

As an undergrad, then yes. Sad to say but in this day and age, if you leave it, you lose it.

Part-time or full-time?
H

I agree with sexkitten, I did my MSc part-time at an institution 20 miles from home. Never again. I had huge problems with communication (some staff don't understand semaphore never mind email) and it was just problematic the whole way through. Personally, I'd rather pull out my toe nails that repeat that.

Publlishing work not PhD related

I admit it; I'm sad and tragic because I like all science. BUT. Anyone ever published work you've done by your lonesome totally unrelated to your PhD?

Must have missed that phase...damn.

That'll suit me fine; prefer first years as they're less likely to catch me out

have you ever discovered...

Does anyone know who I am? Or why I'm sitting in this office? I'm so confused...

what do other people do in their spare time..

What the hell is spare time?

I'm ill qualified to teach dentistry, especially to postgrads! I thought I'd start small and see how I got on, thanks for all the help

I'm doing theoretical dentistry, the sciency bit as oppossed to removing people's teeth with pliers. However, I'm also a state registered biomedical scientist

Given all this talk of people teaching, who do you talk to about taking on some responsibilities like this? I'm looking to do a bit of teaching but my PhD location is postgrad only; I wish to teach undergrad (cos I don't reckon I'm good enough for post grad!)

Feeling Stupid.. how to cope
H

Hurrah, I'm not alone! Right now I feel a right muppet, having done a complete 180 turn into a field I know next to nothing about because it sounds intriguing.

Shall I really go for a PhD?
H

What I can suggest from my own experience may sound twee but may give you perspective. The fact you have some work experience already is certainly in your favour; coupled with your degree grade, your eligibility is unquestionable. What I could suggest is this: you seem to discount your inherent academic ability. If you doubt it to such a degree, do the MSc first-it will bolster your confidence (by proving you can do it) and not impinge too much on your bank balance. Then go do your PhD.

Working times and earning extra money

Thanks everyone, you all helped tremendously

Working times and earning extra money

Hi, I'm new to all this so please forgive the 2 ridiculous questions..! Having worked for the NHS for the last 5 years to a set working time, (question 1) what hours do PhD students typically work and (question 2) anyone know any good ideas for a little extra money earning in an exclusively postgrad college? My PhD doesn't start 'til Nov hence I'm making early plans to minimise the shock to my wallet!
