I'm sorry that you're feeling down at the moment. I was wondering whether your GP could refer you to a Cognitive Behavioural therapist.

I think your distress may not stem from 'Viva anxiety' alone ( I may be wrong).

While I belief certain drugs can relieve anxiety symptoms in the short term - a long term strategy to deal with your stress without medication would be better. ( as were all going to come across anxious periods in our life and prescribed or self medication isn't always the answer)

The CBT therapist would help you to use cognitive techniques to relax as well as improve your "self" talk so you don't wind yourself up.

I think somebody is making up posts on this site and using other forum users identites to give replys- not only do I think it is childish. I think the person doing this needs to get a life !

I think you should legally fight these academic bullys and let them be accountable . I seen this happening so many times - bullying of students, somebody has to stand firm and I applaud you if you can see it through

I think you are treading into dangerous water. In some universities, having a relationship with a lecturer or supervisor is a sackable offence as well as being unprofessional.

You can't help how you feel, so I do advise that you find another supervisor.

I remember an occasion when my friend was going out with her PhD supervisor, she later became pregnant ( yes the supervisor is the father), but the PhD group felt a little uncomfortable, because she was getting more help than them as well as passing her PhD viva with flying colours (No corrrections) The group believed he wrote the thesis for her

You have a right to be angry, but I think you should direct the anger away from the situation, because you will do or say something to those academics which you will regret later.

You need to get some sort of support, whether it's inside or outside the university setting- there has to be somebody. and once all of this has settled down you will be able to put your rational hat back on and move on my positively.

Like you I am a very independant researcher , this is a good quality as you eventually find stepping stones to get to your goal. I feel your going to be fine after this crisis is over, I can talk from experience I've had many blocks in my life- you know people telling me I'm not good enough to do a BSc yet alone a PhD, but yet I've proved them all wrong and got a BSc, a Masters and a full scholarships with a stipend for my PhD.

My closure will be when I go back to those "nay sayers" and tell them I have my PhD- so my advice to you is DON'T GIVE UP !!

You have given some VERY sound advice. I think the forum user is a little shell shocked and angry in regard to her/his situation. You are right he/she shuld take some time and reflect on what went wrong.

In my mind this individual had a lucky escape as they would have had to spend another 2 years with the horrible supervisor. Doing a PhD is STRESSFUL enough without having a supervisor who doesn't give a "Castlemane XXXX"!!!.

The reason the post doc was appointed because my supervisor is a chemist and my PhD has a substantial molecular biology/microbiology slant. The post doc has background in microbiology, so I'm a little reliant on him. I hate working with the post doc, as he's really rude and rubs everyone up the wrong way, he hasn't progressed much up the academic ladder because of his lack of people skills/emotional intelligence.

At the moment I'm trying to work independently and if I have any questions, I talk to people outside my lab. I can't wait to leave and finish this PhD

My supervisor has appointed a post doc from hell, this is his second posting at my University under different supervisors and different science research topics, but he is an arrogant son of a b....ch!!!

His reserach topic is very similar to mine, but he always has be in competition with me to get the correct results first to my supervisor, he talks to me crap, but this time I have stood my ground and wrote a stiff letter to my supervisor as well as talk to him about his behaviour. My supervisor is a very passive individual , who doesn't like conflict.

I feel being a woman scientist in a male environment is tough. Has anybodyu else felt like this.
