i loved that ref! to say the least, he was entertaining and had this crazy haircut. Why should you drink water all the time ??????? I was supporting Paraguay (I'm no England fan). I support anyone willing to take them up. That's not to say that I don't like some of their players like Ferdinand, Croutch and erm...Walcott just to name a few, but when it comes to style of play, team composition etc, my support is elsewhere. Hmmm..Aussie v Japan....dono who to support. The US and whoever...i'll supporting the other team.

what team are you supporting? Me...Brazil.

would you put one of your chapters on the net?
J

thanks sue. i have an option of not handing in my paper. am thinking of doing that and handing out a handout for my presentation. a few people have done that and protected their work. trouble is, when you give handouts, you can't really get as good feedback as you would get had the attendants read the paper in advance. on how many people would search for my topic on the net....loads. the general area where my topic lies is interdisciplinary and a hot top in the humanities at the mo. so its obvious that if i put it up in the net, many people will definitely have access to it.

how many publications do you have?
J

thanks verdy...for lifting me up. lol.

another clarification: our research groups site is accessible by anyone. coz it has an entirely separate web page. the usual means of accessing it tho is through the uni site. however, when we're off campus, we can access to its content by searching for its name on google. hope that makes things clearer ^;^.

am already sure that they are going to be put on the internet :). everyone elses have. i haven't handed them in yet tho. any other constructive (no offence intended)views? Lets not dwell on institutional matters.

1) the paper i am submitting is an entire chapter ( about 10,000 words)
2) yes, it WILL be put on the net. it can be accessed by anyone by simply doing a searching my research topic on google.
3) I want your views so that I can decide whether or not to air my reservations on it.

:)

my apologies on anyone that might feel offended by my clarification - no pun intended. i need to know your views urgently, which is why I might sound like am not appreciating any i am sure stuff.

best,
jojo.

its a whole chapter and slides to explain the chapter. what's an eprints system?

clarification : it's gonna be put on my department's site.

would you put one of your chapters on the net?

hi. am having a presentation soon and we are required to submit the paper in advance so that it can be put up on site. trouble is... everyone can literally have access to it on google. am afraid that this is going to take away the originality of my work, when some nerd somewhere decides to grab and develop my idea. would you put up your paper? or am i just being paranoid?

how many publications do you have?
J

he hadn't done any part of his thesis by the end of this term. he plans to do it in summer. that should be a bit comforting :).

how many publications do you have?
J

thanks Verdy.... did i say i'd published????? that must have been a mistake. lol. am hoping to get three in coz that's what the lecturers in my department said was required to rise above the other competitors for a academic post. they also emphasised on the importance of completing your phd in time. Mia...i find that academics in my field don't really lay a lot of emphasis on the type of journal you publish in. Most journals in my field are usually out on a monthly basis, so editors are often desperate for papers. So...looking at it that way, 3 isn't impossible. A friend of mine recently published a book after publishing 3 papers....and he's a first year!!! he doesn have a life tho - other than books. So i guess for the average person, 2 to 3 would be ok. With one, i wouldn't feel so confident about getting an academic job.

how many publications do you have?
J

depends...if you wanna be an academic (in the humanities) i'd say three. don't worry about the rejection of your paper. incorporate the comments and submit it to another journal. i've always been keen on publishing. i have a few drafts of papers, but my supervisors always discourages me when i say am gonna publish. i was gonna publish in may then one of my supervisors said i shouldn publish for the sake of publishing. i should wait til i really know my field. trouble is.....i've read lots of journals and i can tell you for sure, that my work is a lot better than a lot of papers I have seen in some journals. am planning on publishing later this year - with or without my supervisor's approval. hopefully 2 to 3 papers and that's it, til am done.

is this normal? end of 1st year :)
J

thanks everyone. i think am at either one of these two places: 1) still figuring out my topic or 2) am finally depending more on my work for direction than my supervisor (hmmmmmm... i wish).
