I'm only in first year, but working 20 hours a week to fund myself through on top of my phd work. As a result, I look like the hunch back of notre dame. God help us all. And my friends (not PhD ones) make jokes about PhD students being unattractive. If only they knew...xxx

It's not cheating--but surely if your supervisor is willing to read your essays before you start then he/she will be able to give you some pointers with your historical writing?
I'm not really a historian so probably couldn't help, though I'm sure someone would. You could probably get help from your uni with no extra cost?

How come you're doing a history masters and phd with no prior training? Is it just a passion/interest of yours?

I just wondered if any of you have changed departments half way through your PhD? I have my 1st year review at the end of May, and my supervisor and I chatted yesterday and basically established that I'd be better off in the History Department rather than English Literature. At the moment, my primary supervisor is in English Lit, and my secondary is in History. I think I need to swap them around. I don't want to do this particularly, but the way my research is going, it might be the best thing to do. Has any one else done this, or do you think it's pointless. I'd need to decide in advance of my 1st year review.

I think when I applied to my masters courses it was May/June time, and I got one acceptance, and one rejection within a month. However, it's hard to say whether it's a good thing or a bad thing that you haven't heard, it might just be too early in the year. x

Hello! My brother did an MBA even though he wasn't entirely sure what he wanted from it. It was a massive expense and took a few years. I get the impression that while he is proud of it, he regrets it. For what you want to do, I'm not sure an MBA is the best option. (I could be wrong).
A masters is probably a better option because it will only take you 1-2 years, costs a LOT less, and you can do something as general or specific as you like. Plus, you could progress onto a PhD and/or go into teaching. I think a masters degree is an excellent thing to do whether you want to follow an academic route or whether you want to use it to further your career.

If he's like that with you, imagine him with his friends/family/wife! Don't worry about it, and don't take it personally-- some people aren't easy to work with. My supervisor is a horror. Mx

Hello! I'm not actually sure, but I started in September and took two full weeks of at Christmas. I have booked a holiday in July (for two weeks) and don't intend to take any more time off. Having said that, I now work part time, so 2-3 days a week I do absolutely nothing PhD related. M,x

Thanks, I'll speak to him about it. It just seems so ridiculous - a few emails taken out of context and a bit of a personality clash. I can't give too many details obviously but I really think it's all just a big misunderstanding. It actually made me think about how much I dislike my own supervisor and that i might give him a break from now on!
