The question is are you developing a relationship or theory. If theory, then use theoretical coding which is more sophisticated.
You should use Charmaz's grounded theory if your study involves finding the subjective meaning of illness, for example.

Based on my limited experience, it is possible that a master thesis is of higher quality than a phd thesis.
It really depends on the university or thesis supervisor.

In some universities, you are not supposed to communicate with the examiners on corrections-related issues.

Whenever there is a change of supervisor, there should be agreement on the direction of the thesis right at the beginning. However, my new supervisor tried to change my focus of the thesis later which led to unhappiness... In a sense, much work done could be 'wasted'.

The moral of the story is publication is very important; that is, working at home is more productive too. :-)

However, the university should compensate your *suffering*...

If the links are weak or distant, then your sup and you have not selected the 'right' external examiners.
That is, the external examiners may not be knowledgeable in your field.
So you are the only expert during the viva. :-)
